I notified my insurer today that I had just had towbar fitted to the car. Was somewhat surprised when I was told there would be a refund on the policy. That is a first for me. Perhaps the insurer sees a towbar as something that will reduce claims from rear end gentle knocks:) Just off now to spend the £1.48

People who tow are statistically safer then those who do not, but this is the first time I have come across a discount.

Brilliant; better than the other way round-had a towbar on an old Ford Escort years ago and someone drove in to the back of me when I stopped for a pedestrian on a Zebra crossing. Made a mark in the plastic towball cover on my car-the front of the car behind was a total mess-smashed grille, seriously dented bumper etc etc!

Son had his car rear ended by a van which pushed him into the car in front. he had a towbar and thought he had come off best with just a dented bonnet. When the car was inspected (2016 nissan Qashqai) he was surprised to be told that his car was written off. The shock of the collision had rippled the entire floor pan. Towbar had negated the crumple zone it seems.

That’s what happened to a Volvo estate of mine. A 40 mph rear end shunt by a little Peugeot. His front was damaged right across and pushed back. The Volvo rear door still shut as did the two rear passenger doors. But you could see from the gaps, or lack of, between the door and frame that the backend had moved forward. That one was written off. Fortunately a Saab 9000 my wife had was involved in a rear end shunt at slower speed and although the floor pan had rippled it wasn’t sufficient to write the car off. That came later via an oncoming car hitting her as it lost control on a bend. Tow bars don’t really do any favours to anyone in a shunt.

I had a similar experience with my new car insurance company when I told them that I had been on a driver awareness course after I had been cambered for speeding, this very nice man then knocked £50.00 off my premium,
