I would need a 4 berth van can you tell me what weight the van should be for may car to safely to tow it?

Hi,

You need to look a little more closely at your car VIN data plate and the owners handbook, and really read what is posted there.

Why? Unlike every other manufacturer, Renault quote a maximum towing weight that only includes the driver (or driver and passenger) - so if you need a 4 berth caravan for partner and two small children - that probably will subtract 100kg from the max tow weight.

Most modern caravans have put on weight recently - with "essentials" like microwaves and full sized ovens, loads of chipboard cabinets, etc. Compared to older caravans which didn't include heavy appliances, and used craftsman built framed wood cabinets, you are talking about a serious difference in weight -

If this is your first adventure in caravanning, an older quality caravan will not only be much cheaper and lighter, but won't depreciate the same way new models do.

Alternatively, a folding camper for use in Spring, Summer and Autumn will weight two thirds that of a comparable caravan - and probably give you much more living space

hi brod welcome

interesting question you put there, I had been wondering the same my self I have a 1.9dti megane and posted a very similar question a few weeks ago and got very similar answers strange?

anyway on to the point :- from experience this.

first ignore the paper work it might as well be wrtten in greek or french and no help at all

what you want to know is will it tow and oh yes it will, like a dream mine does we went to the coast last w/e for a trial tow it took a 25% gradient hill thats about 2miles long in third gear and has no problem keeping to the 60 mph limit on motor ways, nuff said.

weight wise I would go for the lightest van you can find in your price range try and get one below 1100kg max gross weight

thats one about 850kg or less shipped weight(empty)and dont overload it

tow with a staberliser bar on and sod the alko hitch

the max nose weight for the car is 75kg but put 80 to 85kg on it(the stableiser will compesate for the extra weight) and off you go happy caravanning.

ps, and just for the sceptics out there with slide rules

the meganes max gross train weight is 2795kg minus the cars max gross weight of 1650kg leaves a trailer weight of 1145kg
