Renault Scenic - Good Tow Car

Hello Everyone

We have been bitten by the caravan bug, but we have a Renault Scenic 1.9dci - 2002 model. Does anyone else have experience of towing with a Scenic - particularly this model - or any helpful suggestions?

Hi I had scenic 1.9,new shape 6 gear model,130 bhp,was good tow car watch your weight though max 1300 kg,I personally hated the car as found it uncomfortable in long journeys,and have heard bad reports about the electrics playing up,had car for year and flogged it on,but as I said was capable tow car if you like it,take it from year youve got its the older shape which was m ore comfy to drive but still max tow of 1300 kg I believe but worth checking,try www.whattowcar.com

you should have no problem towing with the scenic 1.9dci as long as you keep the weight down on the van I tow a bailey ranger 380/2 with a 1.9dti megane mtplm 1058kg with no problems the max tow weight for your car recomended by renault is 1300kg

but as the car only weighes 1290kg thats more than 100% but I believe acceptable.

bearing in mind renault only quote a driver only figure so any extra weight like the missus and the kids/dog have to be deducted from the trailer weight. the user pay load for the car is 250kg max so if the car was loaded fully then the trailer weight would go down to 1050 kg roughly about the same weight as my ranger so this should give you a guide to work to.

the megane tows the weight confortably with no side effects and has no prolem pulling the van up moderate hills 12%ish and can mantain 60mph on the motorway in 5th gear, fuel consumption goes down a bit but I get around 35mpg with the van on the back.

the dci engine has 25bhp more than the dti but about the same torque @ 2600rpm as you will know thats 60ish road speed so the max power is just where you want itthe extra 25bhp will help.

so don't worry get a lightish van and enjoy by the way if you do decide to tow with the scenic dont forget to increase the rear tyres to 32psi it helps.

As you have the same car, your feedback was particularly useful and encouraging Colin. We intend to tow an Abbey Oxford MIRO 977 kg - 2 adults (inc driver) and 2 small kids.

You should have no trouble towing with a Scenic 1.9. I have been towing a Swift Charisma 230 (Mtplm 1230) since Sept.04 with no problems at all. On a trip on the Hull/rotterdam boat I was baulked half way up the ramp and when the ramp was cleared again, it just moved off without reversing first, no problem.

As regards the max. towing weight, as long as you do not exceed the gross train weight (3050kgs for Scenic 2) you will have no problem.

Thanks for that; the Abbey i intend to tow has the same mtplm, so that is encouraging. May i ask what hitch weight you run at, and how does the outfit perform in sidewinds / wind ? Do you tow with the car fully loaded? i assume you have a scenic 2 ? i was mainly worried about being blown about as the car is light and i've not towed before.

Sorry for the delay, been away a few days.

Although the noseweight for the van is 100kgs, the noseweight for the car is only 75kgs and so you must always keep to the lowest of the two weights, in my case 75kgs.

As for driving in windy conditions, since I'm retired I am able to be able to park up, if it gets too windy, even if I stay off the motorways. I had enough of being blown about when I was an HGV driver.

And yes I do have a Scenic2. I do put a fair bit in the car, since there are only the two of us and I do like to be able to get in the van, enroute, to make a brew & a snack without having to climb over things.
