I was thinking of scrapping my old SatNav due to a dead battery but decided to try a new battery instead.
A replacement battery and the special tools to use for my TomTom only cost around £15 on Amazon.
I wondered if I would be able to fit it without wrecking the unit but a battery manufacturer called 99Dot.com has placed good "blow by blow" videos of the replacemant process of many model on UTube and following this I found it quite easy. The video worked in real time and illustrated every screw etc and I was able to work at about the same pace.
Not having experiance of intricate electronics I felt quite pleased with myself when it worked first time.

Thank You David.

This post inspired me to update my Garmin Satnav instead of buying a replacement for £150.

I purchased 2012 mapping for Western Europe direct from Garmin for £40.00(special offer) using Christmas present money given to me for that purpose.
I was able to buy a new battery from an internet supplier for £11.00 and a special 31 piece toolkit designed to open any small electrical gadget for £3.50.
The mapping was a download and the battery and toolkit were delivered free to my door.

Just set it all up and now have a good as new Satnav for £54.50......

Thanks again.
