Hi,

has anyone got experience of retro fitting bunk beds in a caravan?

I have an ABI Ace Globetrotter 4 berth but was interested in fitting a bunk at the rear of the 'van.

Thanks

There's another thread on this subject on Buyers Guide 'Fitting 4 into 3'. Know you've seen it Bungee cos you've posted on it!

In the late seventies we had a 4 berth Sprite Alpine and Dad added another bunk over the double bed with some detachable wooden uprights and a bunk made of 2 steel poles with orange nylon material between them. We used a thin foam mattress on it and it was actually very comfortable for kids. The bunk assembly was a proper accessory and not hand made so maybe you could get something like this from a Caravan Breaker or similar.

Hope you can both find what you're looking for.

What a coincidence!

We (Dad) had exactly the same set up for 2 bunks over the front lounge on a Sprite Musketeer about 10 years earlier, I think it was a kit you purchased.

It meant we slept our family of 7 in the van, mum and dad in a fold down double, 3 kids across the front bed and 2 above.

The ABI Ace Globetrotter had a sibling model, the Pioneer, in fact some model years it was just an optional layout on the Globetrotter - our '83 was badged Globetrotter but with the Pioneer layout which was a side settee with bunk over.

The bunk base is supported on two metal straps reaching up to backrest height from the floor and a folding metal leg at each end - it's under the settee cushion in the daytime but can be rotated upwards for night time. The settee backrest cushion folded out to form the bunk mattress - as the bunk base was also sprung it was very comfortable but not suitable for adults.

You might be able to get all the bunk parts from caravan breakers.

You'd lose the rear dinette if you do a similar conversion, it would become an L-shaped lounge.
