Hi there, can anyone help? I have very recently just bought a caravan with an Alko hitch. When reversing, am I best lifting the alko grip thus removing the inner pressure off the towbar? Someone has advised this is probably better to get best maneouvrability ?

Amanda, I think you will find that Alko themselves recommend releasing the friction on the ball for reversing, which makes sense.

Most of the time, when I remember, I release the Stabiliser when I get out of the car to go into the site reception. Its not required at such slow speeds when looking for a pitch and reversing onto it.

I would suggest that there is going to be no significant difference whether you do, or don't. The tow hook rotates around a circular tow ball with the friction pads located on the sides of the assembly so the pressures on the system are going to be the same going forward or back. Also the amount of reversing one usually does is pretty minimal, especially compared to forward towing.....I hope!
