Thinking of going over to the Rhine Valley area in early September. Has anyone any experience, particularly the weather at that time of year? Am I right in thinking that the grape harvest will be about then? Any info will be gratefully accepted.
Thanks,
Paul

The weather is usually lovely in September, Lutz will probably come along and tell you more about that as he lives there. But for more info on this area have a look at my website we have been going there with the caravan over 8 years and with the car only 30 years. Look at page info on Germany and some of the 8 trips we have stopped on the Rhine at various camping sites. Of course you will be able to use ACSI in September and there is a nice site just outside Rudesheim situated right on the river. We have not stopped there as they do not do ACSI camping card in April but we did go along and visit the site and it looks good. Any more help contact me on my website as in the signature below.

Hi, Dianne,
I was looking at your website just the other day. Will have a closer look, but thought you went over there earlier in the year than September. Caravan Club have a site in their brochure in Rudesheim. Sounds like the town is ok, with a choice of sites! Keep up the good work with the website; I'll be having another look after I return from a visit to Sandringham.
Thanks ,
Paul

I live in a wine-growing town only about 20 miles from Rüdesheim. Rüdesheim is a very 'touristy' place, but in September it should start to get a little quieter. The weather can be very pleasant at that time of the year. You don't say when in Septmeber you will be there, but a number of wine cellars have open weekends when you can get an impression of how they work and, of course, sample their wines. There's one in Eltville from the 9th to the 11th, for example, and another the same weekend in Oestrich-Winkel. Both places are not far from Rüdesheim. Then, there's 'Rhine in Flames' fireworks spectacular in Oberwesel, also on the 9th. Most of the wine fests are over by September, but there is one in Boppard on the 22nd to the 25th.
I'd recommend driving along the Moselle on your way to the Rhine. I think that route is as pretty as the Rhine between Koblenz and Mainz, so you can double the enjoyment by going that way.

If you want to try a little further south and work north, the French side of the Rhine near Colmar is very attractive - Riquher, Keyserburg etc. If you are a car buff the Bugatti museum at Mulhouse is something special.

Yes youare right we do always go with the caravan in April, May and June but in the years before when just touring with the car we have been to that area at all times of year including the Christmas Markets at the begining of December. As Lutz says Rudesheim is very touristy not our cup of tea at all. But there ate some lovely places to visit on the Rhine. If you look at my website, when we have been to the Rhine we have three times stopped at Hattenheim which is just outside Eltville right on the river. This site was found by our German friends and we like it the owner has a Gastof which serves quite good meals or their is a very nice Hotel in the village which is very nice a bit more expensive. though. You won't find it in any of the caravan books. You must do the trip up from Rudesheim by cable car as I have described on the website. Also the Kathy Wolfhart Christmas shops of which there are two are well worth a visit. Don't forget to *** into a Cafe or Hotel in the Drosselgasse for a Rudesheimer Coffee. It is to die for. Asbach and plenty of cream.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. It would be a return visit for me, I went through the Ardennes, up the Moselle and down the Rhine into the Black Forest, over into the Vosges in France and back to Calais on a solo camping trip a few years ago; well....ok,46 years ago, on my 125cc Lambretta scooter! I can still remember all those vines on the valley sides. No doubt there will be some changes!! Thanks, Paul
