Weekend just past we had occasion to travel from Skye to the Fareham area for a funeral. Setting aside the reason for the trip it was the worst journey we've ever encountered on UK roads.

Maybe a combination of the time of year, public events or whatever, it took for ever once we got past Carlisle.

My commiserations to any who lives south of Carlisle and has to use the motorways or indeed any other road.

From Carlisle to the south coast was supposed to be just over 6hrs according to the sat nav. It took just under 10.

Some of the delays due to construction work had notices saying Delays Until Spring 2026 or 2028. We were beginning to think we would be stuck in traffic until then.

In the motorway service stations the Samaritans had set up shop handing out packets of tranquillisers. We're sure at one point people wearing white coats were walking down the hard shoulder handing out subscription forms to Exit.

The homeward journey wasn't much better although we're only as far as Cambridgeshire so far, staying a while with family.

How any of you cope with that on a daily basis I can't imagine.

We don't need people to switch to EVs we need to get people off of the roads.

PS. Many of the charging points we came across were not being used. Maybe they were still stuck on the roads searching through their luggage for a handful of AA batteries.

Our recent trip from the south Lakes took 8 hrs, normal time with a shortish stop would be just over 5 hrs, that’s what it was going up. Our nav aids did not pick up any accidents it seemed just sheer weight of traffic compounded by local and national infrastructure construction works. It’s certainly no fun, that’s for sure. Hope the return trip improves.

We live just off of the M1 junctions 13 and 14, at least once a week the motorway is stopped for accidents, from the M25 to junctions 15 Northampton, it is normally restricted to 50 mph due to the volume of traffic. When we had to call out Mayday a couple of weeks ago the recovery truck had to come from Northampton to J 12 at Toddington. He came cross country as he said he dare not use the M1.

It was the first weekend after many schools broke up, and of course Sam, you just added to the high numbers didnt you?

(Just teasing, but I am sure you get my point)

We did think about the school holidays but a lot of cars just had one or two people in them and of course plenty of commercial vehicles.

I think a lot of it was either construction work or hold ups at junctions with people trying to cross lanes. Then there are those doing the 'Post Office Queue Shuffle' cos the other lane is always moving faster.

M6/M40 and A34?
Was this the Friday or Saturday?

Sadly your experience is not unusual these days. But whoever sees anyone working as you drive in single file at 30 mph for 5 miles to safeguard the workforce?

Junction 11A M5 for Cirencester is a long term delay zone. Known locally as the missing link the A417/419 between the M5 andM4 is being totally rebuilt , anticipated opening spring 2027.
Welcome to the pleasures of driving down here😉

Pretty much any road beginning with M or A ,😄

One issue is that every supposed road improvement is just a magnetic for more people to use and it's overloaded as soon as it's finished.

My grand Parents lived just off of the Aberdeen harbour, in Clarence Street, where the tall ships race is starting this week finishing in Oslo I think. I didn't know about it.

On my list of places to go as a stepping stone. 👍.
I luckily worked in the Shetlands and Unst for several months, rugged but beautiful. If you like fiddle music, Blazing fiddles, who come from Lerwick tour the UK. Fantastic.,
