Just been going through my route plan and notice that Rouen looks very difficult to pass through and understand on the maps.

Has anyone passed through this village before if so do you have any tips so we dont get lost. Maybe its just me panicking, never been to France before with caravan.

Thanks

Lisa

We've been through Rouen lots of times now and never had a problem. Where are you actually heading for? That will obviously make a difference to the advice you get about a good route through what is actually quite a reasonble sized city, not a village!

Greetings,

In giving the following information I'm assuming that from Rouen you are heading for Evreux and then Chartes to pick up the old N10. If you're not then this info is of no use, however.

Travelling along the A28 from Abbeyville on the outskirts of Rouen you will encounter a long steep hill followed by an equally long and downhill sloping tunnel.

On emerging at the other end you should keep your eyes skinned for a sign to the Airport. From memory it's the third exit after the tunnel exit but it is clearly signed. Leave the A28 at this point and follow the road down to a set of traffic lights which are at a T junction. You want to do a left turn at these lights and get yourself over to the right hand lane because, almost immediately, there is a second set of lights at a cross roads. (seems frightening but I've never had the lights in my favour and consequently it can be taken as slowly as you want.)

Immediately after the cross roads, the road to the Airport is straight (D6014) on but you are looking to veer off right onto the D6015 which will be signed Pont de l'arch and possibly Evreux. Follow this road down the side of R Seine for about 6miles where there is a roundabout. Take the left turn and then after Pont de l'arch where you will cross the river, you will pick up signs for the A154 to Evreux.

I hope the above is of use but wherever you finish up, have a good holiday.

Regards

We to are heading that way and I have just been looking at the route, it is th eonly bit that worries me!! We are heading for the A28 to our overnight stop at Le Mans.

I am hoping that the A28 will be signposted through the city!

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers,

Ian

Ian,

First things first. Please don't worry. Whilst I appreciate that very few of us 'enjoy' the unusual, from my experience of French roads and traffic signs there is very little to get in a lather about.

I note that you are heading for Le Mans.

There is a peage(toll) road from Rouen to Le Mans and that is the A28 south of Rouen. If you want to do that then the signs all the way from Abbeyville, through Rouen will be obvious and very easy to follow. My latest information is that it costs 10 Euros solo and 18 Euros with a caravan.

If you don't want to pay that toll then follow my directions (above) and go to Evreux. After the above directions you will be on the N154 which is a dual carriageway. After bypassing Evreux you will, after about 17mls arrive at a roundabout near the town of Nonancourt. From that roundabout you have the choice of right (N12) to Alencon and then D338 to Le Mans or left to Dreux and then right onto D928 via Nogent Rotrou to Le Mans. This choice of routes is not exclusive. There are loads of very good quality roads in the area and I have noticed several alternatives whilst looking at the map in writing this thread to you.

That is all part of the enjoyment in visiting France. There are literally hundreds of villages and towns that we, the British, have never discovered, that would be, if in the UK, be described as tourist 'honey pots'.

Don't worry too much about Rouen, it's not a big problem. Via Michelin took me straight through it a couple of weeks ago and my Garmin mirrored the route. It's actually very well signed.

PS Although you're going through the town it's a dual carriageway with all the attributes of a Motorway.

We came back north via that toll road, from Le Mans to Rouen was either 43 or 45 euros with a caravan two weeks ago.The road was relatively quiet and stress free driving with regularly spaced service areas, you've got to weigh the cost against the ease of driving I suppose.

Many thanks for that, just one thing, you say the toll is 18 euro with the van. Is that for the A28 Rouen to Le Mans?

viamichelin is saying 30 euros 40 cents?

Cheers,

Ian

Ian,

As a result of Rob T's thread (above I've been doing some digging.

According to the site www.alos-sa.com (this Company would, it appears manage the Motorway between Rouen and Alencon), it transpires that the toll for a Class 2 vehicle (which covers most if not all 'ordinary' car/caravan combinations) is Euros25.20. I don't know why that portion of the route between Alencon and Le Mans is missing.

My Via Michelin gives a figure of Euros31.92.I apologise for my previous misinformation . I received that from "the fourth emergency service" Thank goodness I'm not with them!!!.

I would point out that the distance between Rouen and Le Mans is in the region of 135miles. In such circs. I would give the Autoroute a miss and use the route I put on previously. The toll charges work out at 23cents a mile which is a shedload when you have to put the cost of fuel on top. P

AND add in that you can buy fuel off the autoroute at around 20/25 cents per LITRE less which is a significant saving on a tank full of petrol/diesel.
