Hi. Going down to York Rowntree Park site from Edinburgh at Easter. Can anybody recommend the best route? Caravan club advise approaching from A64. We will be travelling down the A1/M1 and then the A59 is the most direct route into York. Is it advisable to turn off the A59 right on to the A1237 then left on to the A64 then left at A19 junction approaching Rowntree via Fulford? Seems a bit longer but avoids city centre.

York is a nightmare for traffic with lots of it on very narrow streets and the route shown by the club is the only sensible one.
You can use the A59 off the A1(M) and then turn right at the roundabout onto the A1237 the York ring road and then left onto the A64. That route is quite slow and you may just want to stay on the A1 to the A64 which is a bit longer but time wise there is not a lot in it.
Do not try towing through York on anything but the advised route off the A64 if you do not know the area.

We are going second week of April so hopefully as it is a weekday it will be quieter. Never knew there was a suggested route aas was goingt use post code and satnav. We coming up from the south.

Yes, follow the directions in the CC handbook (A64 and then in towards York at Fulford (A19)). Whilst it might seem a longer way from the A1 (from the south), it's much easier than going in at the first York turn (A1036) from the A64 and past the racecourse. If you're coming from the north, it isn't too bad (and is much shorter disctance wise) going in on the A59.

I am afraid York roads are a nightmare at both weekends and weekdays. There is simply more traffic than the roads can take. The directions are in the handbook and web site and are the only sensible route there. Don't arrive before12.00 as they will not let you in due to restricted access.
