We are going to be staying at Rudesheim for a few days in June.

We have stayed there before and so have done the local sights. (The oompah bands in the Drosselgasse etc.) My wife has suggested a day trip on a boat, perhaps as far as Cologne. Maybe returning by train. Has anyone done such an excursion? If so where should I look for information?

From what you are saying, I think that it is too optimistic to travel downstream as far as Koln, so perhaps Koblenz is more realistic. I like the idea of going upstream to Mainz, We have never visited that city so it may be a possibility. Thank you Lutz for your kind invitation. Sadly it's wasted on us as my wife is Tee-Total and I do not drink alcohol when driving and rarely drink white wine preferring red. Still we might fit in time to travel along the river Lahn as you suggest.

Anyway many thanks to you both for the information.

I wouldn't say that going as far as Cologne is optimistic for a day trip, but the Rhine between Koblenz and Cologne is not really that interesting. It's really only worth it if you want to have a look around Cologne.

The trip up the Lahn with a visit to Limburg cathedral would be just the thing if you're not going for the wine.

There is a very nice kebab shop in Rudesheim.

How long would it take on a boat from Rudesheim to Koln?

It takes around 2hours in a car A3 permitting I am thinking about 6 hrs in a boat.

Nice kebab eh; an oxymoron if ever I heard one!
