San Gothard Border Crossing

This year my wife and I travelled to italy thro' Switzerland using the San Gothard tunnel. Immediately after passing thro' the border we were stuck in a long queue of traffic winding uphill away from the border for what seemed like a couple of miles into Italy. By the time we got to the top of the hill and the traffic started to flow more quickly, the clutch on my car was burning to the point where I thought it might 'pack in'. Has anyone else had this experience, or can someone reassure me that this may have been a 'one off' as we plan to travel to italy by the ame route next year.

"one off" not sure i could say its a one off, most likely that in the same event you could get the same result.

Does not mean the clutch would definately pack in, but was stressed by the events. this sort of thing could happen anywhere where you have large slow queue of traffic on an incline.

If it that specific bit of the route that worrys you, you could avoid it.

Just 200 yards before the border crossing you can actually get off the A2 and use local/main road,[chiasso] not anywhere as busy and if you use a map source[autoroute] you could use this road for 8 or 9 miles then rejoin the faster A9?.

Have used it to get to lake garda going across from como to bergamo, you simple need to use part of this route [sp17]

Its not perfect and involves planning as you use minor roads[but well big enough for a caravan.and no need to worry about the clutch..

Thanks Giovanni. Have you used the main border crossing before and, if so, have you found that the traffic queues uphill?

lawrence.

If you mean the proper crossing into Italy, then have queued on the switz side to cross into Italy but the traffic has been ok once over the border.

Infact have usually found queues when leaving Italy to go into switzerland.
