for years i have used sat navs going back to 1998 when garmins pointed you in the right direction but no instructions... for phone users ie android, and no doubt apple Tom Tom have finally made an app that works properly.... £15 a year gets you mapping of all Europe plus up dates plus live services...have been using it daily for over a month now and it is better than the co pilot app i have been using for the past couple of years, although co pilot does do RV vehicles which is an extra help for when towing.... neither of these products should be compared to the inferior freebies that are in abundance in app stores. sometimes it difficult to explain why somethings are better but i suppose its a .bit like comparing a Ford Anglia to a Ford Focus... even if the ford Anglia is reliable, its hardly in the same league for anything as a Ford Focus...

no good to me Jonny, if it talks, constantly, it would go out the window. got enough with the wife telling me when I've gone wrong. all I need is a sat nav that points in the right direction in silent mode, give me the ford anglia every time no electronics to go wrong, no flashing lights, no cam belts to change, and it's got a choke lever that you can pull out so the wife has somewhere to hang her bag!!

Like the OP I was an early adopter of satnav, and have used the standalone "point in the right direction" units, TomTom software running on PDAs and a couple of standalone TomToms.I now run the NavMii app on my Android phone - it's free but there are various paid upgrades available, I've just installed the Safety Camera upgrade (about £1-50) but I haven't yet paid the premium for the Ad-free version.

I don't think it's any better or worse than TomTom (I've never tried the TomTom new app, though), but it's one less gadget and if Mrs Gozza is trying to sleep in the car I can have the spoken directions in my bluetooth earpiece rather than booming out around the car. It is possible to turn sound off and just use the on screen navigation!

The only thing I've found to be wary of is the need to keep "allow automatic updates" turned off, as it did once do an update while I was driving and then refuse to work until I reinstalled the map! Other than that it does everything I need to (including being able to set an RV mode to avoid the tiniest roads).

As usual, no commercial interest, just a satisfied user.

I use Google Maps on my Iphone and it performs as well as my TomTom.. I also have SatNag sitting next to me with a map on her knees giving unwanted advice. :)

Google maps all the way- it's FAR better than the dedicated Garmin I used to use, re-routing according to live traffic is great, and it's very clearly set out. Why pay for anything else when it's so good?

I use TomTom on my iPhone (with the traffic addition). At around £40 with lifetime map updates it seems a bargain and has never let me down - yet!!
