After several hrs of trying In the garden I finally worked out how to use my satallite dish and receiver and got a good picture. Then the bloody wind blow my dish over and it landed LNB first on concrete paving slabs, since then I can't get a strong signal. Do you think I have broken the LNB?

Don't know if you've broken the LNB - check that it hasn't twisted, but not easy as it shouldn't be straight anyway as there's a skew needed (all to do with geometry and geography) about 12 degrees.

Wind on the dish is a problem - pegging the tripod legs down only helps in light winds - additionally I use a pegged guyline front and rear to keep the dish from blowing forwards, or backwards, easy to fabricate from a camping shop.

Putting guy lines front and back could allow it to tip sideways. Suggest you use 3 lines to form an equilateral triangle to ensure rigidity.

Don't need to - the side-on profile of a disk is minute compared to the front-rear profile - pegging the tripod is enough to stop it tipping sideways. Ours has survived gale force winds front-on pegged as I've described, the pegs had loosened a little by morning though.

Wind blew mine over on Grass and it broke the LNB had to buy a new one.

I anchor mine down with a screw they use to keep dogs tethered and use a chain with a lock attached. Also secures it from theives, never know.

Hello Ratty 3,
From your post it sounds like all this is new to you,the key thing is - practise.Keep trying ,persevere. Borrow a working LNB if you can.The more you practise the easier it becpmes.
I remember the very first time I tried - I ended up standing on top of a wheelie bin before I got a picture ! Now after practising in the garden I've got it down to a fine art and can get a picture in minutes on sites both in this country and France.
Move it around the garden and try to find the satellite at each new location, you'll soon get the hang of it.
The easiest method I've found (using a Foxsat HD receiver that is pretuned to the satellite) is to select a Freesat channel - say 101 (BBC1) on the receiver then search for the satellite. When a picture appears on the TV you know you lined up with the correct satellite.Works for me - every time!
It's important to have the receiver already tuned to Freesat before you start and use a compass.
There are websites out there that can tell you the angle to point the dish at wherever you geographical location - try http://www.dishpointer.com/
PS I also use a satellite finder device as well although it's not strictly necessary.

Hi Ratty

Don't waste your time with the old LNB

I have a similar one to this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sky-Quad-adapter-older-dishes/dp/B003MQG2HE/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1421145485&sr=1-3

The quad enables a friend to also use my dish.

For alignment skew and elevation I use this app on my phone.

The question here on this topic was .Do you think I have broken the LNB. Well yes I think the LNB is not so much broken but is certain off frequency hard surface dont do the insides of an LNB any good at all. Dusty has the right idea change the and LNB and dish you can get both on Ebay for about £24 and under which the MaxiView will probably be about the same for an LNB.and you can then run 4 units from 1 dish IF YOU WANTED TO . Good Luck with whatever you do .
Sir Roger
