I am thinking of attaching a 65cm folding arm satellite dish to an exsisting status directional aerial. Using the handle it can be folded flat when traveling and raised when on site, it can also be rotated to find the satellite from inside the van. I don't foresee any problems but would like your views/comments. RegardsTom

The idea sounds good, but will the lower pole mounting take the leverage strain when the wind gets up ... & will the mechanism that you will wind the dish up with, will that be strong enough to hold it in position when its windy...
65cms is quite a large diameter for the wind to catch, & its more than twice the area of a status 530 on its side ....

When the Russians have sorted out the problem that caused their recent launch to fail the new Astra satellite will be put in place. It will have a more directional footprint than the one it replaces so will have a stronger signal in UK but a weaker one in the southern half of France. Such is the difference that the experts advise that even in Orkney only a 45 cm dish would be required. Given that most caravanning is a bit south of Orkney larger dishes may be redundant in UK and northern France. Even on the old Astra we had no problems with a ground mounted 54cm dish right down to Languedoc. I would speak to a specialist to see what diameter they would advise based on your future travel plans.
