Save ferry costs.

Ferry companies charge extra for caravans over 2.6 metres.Mine is 2.65 including the status aeriel.When I booked with the CC I said that I would remove the Status - a fairly easy job - to reduce the height to under 2.6 m.Saved me a pocket full of cash.We always use the sat system in France anyway so don't use the Status.

A thought - The ferry companies put all caravans through the same lanes anyway - Don't they? There's always masses of headroom on board.Is this just a money making height restriction set at 2.6m when they know that most caravans are just over.

Would appreciate your comments.

its pretty blatantly a money making scheme, i go France every six weeks since we have bought a house there, when we first started going we had a ford galaxy which had the roof bars fitted. the bars where designed to be slid to the rear of the car and left on when not in use and lokked like a roof spoiler however they made the car higher than the limit for this type of car on the majority of ferries. the difference in cost ? anything from as little as

We took out Status aerial off for the same reason - to save being charged as 'overheight'.

My OH would also have taken off the towball if it reduced the vehicle length!

on Irish ferries it is the same price regardless of which height you put in.for UK to ireland.

Caravans are usually on the same boat deck on the ferries as coaches and HGVs which are far higher than a caravan complete with aerial.

Only on one occasion many years ago was height an actual issue. I forget which shipping line it was but as we boarded the ferry there was a guy with a pair of steps unscrewing the top spike from the old type Status aerial from every caravan that had one. Doing this, apparently, provided enough headroom.
