Scotland - Cairngorms National Park

The beauty about caravanning is that you get to see many parts of the UK which you wouldn't normally consider visiting, far too many places to mention from beach holidays to walking in the Lakes and North Wales.

This year we are contemplating taking a trip north of the border to Scotland. Already booked for Edinburgh during late May school holidays and are now looking for a break in the Cairngorms during August.

Have heard that midges can be a problem in parts of Scotland. Is this applicable in the Cairngorms and would they still be around in August? Any advice of sites or other information would be greatfully appreciated.

It's not inevitable that you'll encounter midgies in the Cairngorms, but certainly possible. August is definitely in the midge season too. Best be prepared, rather than deterred.

Hi Big S,

Yes, you'll probably come across midges in August in that neck of the woods. During the day, you'll probably be OK, but as the evening comes, say around 7.00pm they'll start coming out. I wouldn't let it put you off visiting any part of Scotland, as I've never experienced it THAT bad over the years that it's spoiled any part of our holiday. I would take precautions though and not sit outside too long after the start coming out. Having said all that, you may be lucky and not come across them at all.

One site that I would recommend is the CC one at Grantown on Spey. Hope this helps,
