We are having a seasonal pitch for next year. The pitch for both the caravan and awning is loose stone. What type of awning peg would be most suitable for this type of ground? Also would it be necessary to have thicker ground sheet to make it easier/more comfortable to walk on in the awning - could be walking bare footed in the awning.

I would recommend the use of steel pegs, we use the cross 't'-type but some use extra long nails!

When we had a seasonal pitch for a season we were able to leave the awning in situ (sometimes this is not allowed) and found the best insulation was flattened cardboard boxes(obtainable from any supermarket) the stronger the better which we laid underneath the ground sheet. It was much kinder to bare feet and easier to change if for any reason it became damp/wet for any reason. The cardboard also helped keep the ground sheet clean and puncture free.

Hope you enjoy your seasonal pitch, Colin. It's been a revelation to us and a much more relaxed way of enjoying caravanning. No more hunting for good pitches, no setting up, towing just twice a year (there and back!), arrive when you like, and leave when you like. You'll probably find you'll use the van much more than many others as it's so easy to get going. We arrive early Friday and leave at 5 am Monday (!)and we don't miss many weekends. Fantastic escape.

For pegging, use long rock pegs and smash 'em in with a club hammer. Don't forget to have a strong tie-down kit for the awning as well, because you may be away during bad weather.

Under foot, we use a double layer of ground sheet, a breathable sheet and a cheap cut-off of lino, which is brilliant. You really can't have too much, but you can justify the extra bulk because you're not towing very often (we have storage box, fridge and a small patio heater in our gear!)

Enjoy it...
