For a start, the Hobby Prestige is over 2.3m wide so, in the UK, it may be towed legally only by a vehicle with a GVW of over 3.5 tonnes and this disqualifies any car or normal 4x4.

Richard,

In addition to the comment by Lutz, the reason you find it hard to get insurance is that in the UK, Hobby, Roma, Tabbert etc are favoured by the "travelling" community, and also they are the prime target of thieves, so they are VERY high risk vans.

OH, just a thought, if your Hobby was such a bargain, are you absolutely certain that it is NOT a stolen van?

Yes, positive - came from a trustworthy person who maybe had more money than sense. Width is worrying though!! Website showed them as 2.3m wide but the measuring tape says otherwise!

I'm afraid Lutz is right. You do need a 3.5 tonne truck for towing in order to stay the right side of the law. You could have it delivered to a site, who would accept it, but this would be an extra cost you have to take into account. Another problem you may encounter is that many site owners will not have Hobby caravans on their seasonal pitches --- I know this is fact as we once owned one and we eventually had to sell it because we couldn't get it resited closer to home! As for insurance, if you still want to go down that route you could get in touch with the NFU who were willing to insure ours. You might be requested to have a Super Mule fitted as an extra safety precaution against theft.

If you haven't already parted with cash and aren't too bothered about upsetting your 'friend' it would be worth having a rethink.
