We are new to the caravan world and are going to see a private sale Bailey ranger 500/5 2004 with lots of extras included. It is around £6500 and this will take all of our hard earned savings. We are very nervous about buying privately but some dealers only offer a 3 month warranty and the caravans are a lot more expensive. Can anyone please advise on what we should be looking for and views on buying privately.

Look forward to hearing your views and any words of wisdom!

Hi Tim

You need to be sure that the vendor has the right to sell the caravan before parting with any money.

Go to the sellers home address, ask to see the CRiS registration and be sure that there is no outstanding finance.

There are one or two pointers on this website which can be reached via the Home Page, links don't work but if you copy and paste the following text into your web browser it will lead to more information.

I have just bought a ranger 500 5 privately it was in really good condition ,and it was just the right layout for us .When i was polishing it i noticed some very fine lines going up from the window apertures, when i looked closer they were in fact cracks about 7 of them .So look closeley around that area because now i am having to pay an 300 pounds for specialist repairs to the front panel. Luckily no damp was detected.i hope this was useful.Regards Bill

Thanks for the word of warning Bill. We are going to see it tomorrow and it's handy to know your experience as we are now a bit more aware of what to look for. Just wondered how old yours was?
