Hi,

just wondered what security devices are the most popular, i.e. Wheel Clamps, Hitch Clamps, etc.

I've been looking at the variety on offer online, it is best to go with the most expensive you can afford? or do the basic ones do a good job?

You've got an Eriba Familia right? First of all, you shouldn't have too much trouble owning an Eriba, they are not popular with the usual suspects.

In fact we haven't heard of an Eriba being stolen in the UK, but it's not a good idea to tempt people - so:

1. You have an AL-KO 1300 stabiliser coupling, so buy an AL-KO 1300 Safety and Safety ball (may come in the package).

When you stop at a service station, fit the lock and remove it just before you set off. It's not a good idea to have the van locked to the car when you are driving.

When parked, fit the safety ball (stops the thief from using an undersized tow hook) and the safety lock.

2. You have allow wheels with a locking wheel nut? Then buy the EuroClamp Bulldog - this clamps around the kerb side wheel.

The Euroclamp needs regular lubrication of the lock.

This is the basic minimum, and it should be sufficient for your insurance.

I recall reading somewhere of a simple mod. to the caravan wiring (and the plug) which had the effect of blowing the electrics in any car no so modified which was connected to the caravan. Presumably most lowlife will couple up the lights to avoid drawing attention to the van on tow, so perhaps this may help ? Anyone remember the details ?

Another idea on the same lines is to convert to the continental 13 pin connector which should be quite unexpected by rogues in UK (although I appreciate may be a bit counter productive in Europe). This has the other great advantage of being a much better electircal connection than 12N and S.

Changing to 13-pin wouldn't really be counter productive in Europe because caravan thefts are not a major issue over here. Very few caravans are stolen.

The wiring plug/socket modifications you refer to are listed in the PCM top tips section on this web site. Under the heading Wired for bugulars.

I did this modification to my caravan and believe it saved it from certain theft. The wheel clamp and hitch lock had both been forcibly removed and ready to go.
