Seized Corner Steadies !

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend the best way to maintain and lubricate these - what are the best products to use etc... (WD40 ?) ?

My 2 rear ones are too stiff to turn even with my cordless !

Many Thanks in advance

Suggest you try some thin lubricating oil. Apply liberally and leave for a few hours and then try to turn with an old fashioned handle/ wheel-nut spanner. Bit drastic to scrap the van!!

very helpful - Ta !

Look on "our website" attn Haymarket and then ignore prev comment.

I think this was mentioned in this month's mag, either grease (but will pick up dirt) or clean engine oil. pg 100

Simon,

Please ignore the first comment. Most people on the forum will be practical and helpful.

If it is stuck, as has happened to me when winter caravanning, i give all the moving parts a good soaking with Plus Gas from Halfords, leave over night and this usually frees it. I then use grease on the threads and a thick oil on the other moving parts.

If you cannot get Plus Gas then a good soaking with WD40 on all the parts usually does the trick, followed by the grease and oil.

Use the van 12 months a year and on several ocasion when towing on salted roads have fond the steadies to be extremel stiff, I have always found that treating them with degreraser , washing this of then drying, followed by a clean with a wire brush then applyin a quality grease has been sucsesfull

Certainly give them a good clean with w wire brush and maybe even a buff with some fine wet and dry, to remove any rust and scale that will jam the free movement. Then lots of lubricating oil and keep winding them up and down until they free off. However, also check that they are not kinked, if they are then it is possible a replacement is the only answer.

Once you get them cleaned up and free I suggest you use some Comma Spray Grease 500ML about a fiver from Halfords. Much easier to use than trying to smear grease on and it gets in all the corners.

Simon - I agree with other postings on this topic that a good quality grease is the best answer. This is assuming that the steady thread is not damaged. I once had a rear steady which was a devil of a job to lower or raise - problem was that some how or other the thread had been bent - very little sign of damage to the eye when it was on the van but when I removed it I could see the bend in the thread. New steady thread, a good liberal coating of grease and no further problem.

When l worked for ICI we used a product called thread guard, but l am sure it was banned due to high contant of lead,so l now use copper slip a lot more freindly but no where near as good but ok for the caravan steadies.
