My daughter has recently purchashed a new Dethleffs Motorhome from a Lancashire company, as she lives in Nottinghamshire she asked a Notts dealer if they would service her Motorhome and take over any warranty work that may become necessary. The dealer made all sorts of excuses for not doing the servicing one being that the vehicles the Lancs firm sold were imports!! What!.

Ok she did not buy the Motorhome from them but surely the profit from servicing and aftersales must be very high, how can they afford to turn business away? unless its just spiteful service managers.

Jim,

This is common for many makes of caravan. From a thread on another forum it appears that manufacturers are unwilling to pay dealers fairly for warranty repairs. Something about the dealer making plenty of money from the sale so having to share some of the responsibility. Hence if you didn't make the original sale it's not worth your while.

As you've said warranty work should be very lucrative. As a customer you don't mind how much it costs and the service centre "should" get their money no problems.

Unfortunately it appears this is another example of a customer unfriendly practice which has become acceptable in the caravan industry.
