Setting up satellite dish with Humax hd box

Hi

Father Xmas arrived late today with my new Humax HD box. I purchased a Maxview dish and tripod a little while ago secondhand and I am now trying to try out the equipment in the garden.

I have a compass and maxview satellite finder to assist me but after hours of trying I have had no success.

Having checked on the Maxview website I now seem to have 2 contradictory sets of instructions for the satellite finder - one says I should aim for the maximum number of LEDs to light the other says the smallest number.

HELP PLEASE, Yes I am shouting - in desperation.

4. Using a Humax HD receiver

For Humax Foxsat HD receivers, the procedure is a little more complex, not least because it might involve a re-tune of the box, involving the need to re-enter your postcode and perform a channel scan again. (It looks like Humax has designed the box for permanent professional installations and not DIY/mobile ones. Which isn't good news for us caravanners. Or indeed people hoping to save some money by doing their own home install. Please don't shoot me - I'm only the messenger!)

Anyway, go to the Manual Tune screen via Menu and Setup. Then on the Transponder line, click the right arrow to get the transponder list. Select 11426 H 27500 A and click OK. (11426 MHz is the frequency of the transponder that carries the EPG, so find that frequency and you have the programme guide.) Now aim the dish as described above until you get a signal strength and quality of at least 50%. If the channel list doesn't appear, go to Freesat Tune (Menu/Setup/OK, then select Freesat Tune/OK) and the channels should then found. Select Save/OK. Exit the Menu system.

Ruddy eck ray that would do my head in, just bought a 19" tele from Tesco with built in recorder to a memory stick, think we will record programmes before we go away, saves me throwing the dish about and going off on one when l can't get the signal.

No patience you see, so her that has to be obeyed tells me.

Thanks everyone who've replied. All advice and encouragement VERY WELCOME.

I don't have "Sky" at home - this is my steps into satellite TV - I'm mainly hoping to use the setup in France in the summer.

I don't think I'll be trying again today as there is about 4 inches of snow on the ground and it's snowing heavily as I type!

Does anyone actually have the Maxview Satellite finder? I would be very grateful for understandable, simple instructions as how to use it as the provided instructions are VERY POOR.

Thanks again

Tim

I have the Maxview satellite finder. It is necessary to tune to the maximum number of LED's, when you have all aligned reduce the volume (sensitivity)until 2 or 3 light remain and then tune again to the maximum signal.

Take care to align to the correct satellite following the advice above or the box will not accept your postcode.

Hi guys

I've just read your post and thought you might be interested to know that Eurosat has launched a new satellite finder (DSM-4S) which is a hand held device which locates and identifies the main European satellites they resell this item via companies like Conrad Anderson or Roadpro

Tim you have to use the Maxview finder in a step by step process. You have to set manually the approx elevation first using the info from the stickers supplied with the dish. Then rotate the dish up/down to achieve the max number of leds lit on the finder. Now turn the knob anti clockwise so the volume is reduced and you have say just a couple of leds lit. Now repeat the up/down to achieve the max number of leds lit. Twice is usually enough.

Use this technique side to side, using the compass to get the right satellite. Once you have done this remove the finder - on the Humax Foxsat, you cannot get a picture with the finder still connected.

With the humax it is useful to locate the quality and strength bars in the menu as this helps refine the dish position.

Might be a slightly more expensive solution, but I bought a pre-programmed 5500 channel non-HD box in France for about _50. Not only can it find every sat visible in Europe, it also produces a tone on the SCART output that varies in pitch with signal strength which makes alignment a doddle.

The best bit is that if you hit one of the European sats by mistake, when you ask it to find the stations it is immediately obvious. Mine also shows the sat and signal stength details every time the station is changed.

Once aligned I replace it with my Freesat box. The 'alignment' box does have the advantage however that some stations that are PPV here are FTA on other sats - IMSMC Eurosport is one of them, albeit with a non-English commentary.
