Shock Absorbers

When we were Caravanning 25 years ago I used to fit Progressively rated rear Shock Absorbers, but cannot remember the make. They were the conventional Shock Absorber with a Spring fitted on the outside. I want to fit a pair to the rear of my X-Trail. Can anyone out there advise a returning "Tugger" from being a Motorhomer?!

hi,these sound like monroe load levellers, where the coil spring is on the outside of the shock they take load progressively,hope this helps.john.

The correct term is 'coil over shock absorbers', Googling that will give you plenty to go at

The EU specify that for private cars the centre of the ball hitch should rest between 350 and 420mm from the ground when both the car and trailer are laden, coupled and ready to roll.

If your hitch is below the lower limit then it means that either the hitch/rear of the car is overloaded, or something has worn or failed in the suspension of the vehicle.

The use of spring assisters must not be used to correct either an overload situation or broken suspension parts.
