I'm thinking of fitting Alko shock absorbers to my 2007 single axle Abbey Vogue 460 which has a MTPLM of 1350kg. Two questions -
1. Are they worth fitting ?
2. If so, which colour do I need, red or blue

Thanks in advance.

Hi John
It's worth having your wheels balanced ( if not already done )
Here are the AlKo shock absorbers for your MTPLM

You woudn't drive your car with out shock absorbers fitted would you ??

I have never had shock absorbers fitted to any of my vans but I can see them as useful. However make sure that you can fit them without interference from any movers etc.

Hi Sprocket
Thanks for your reply and links but I'm still unclear as to which colour I need. (Am I being a bit dim?).
The Alko site gives the required colour "Suitable for the weight ranges" red = 1301 - 1800 kg, blue 901 - 1300 kg but what weight ranges are they referring to ? Is it the MTPLM of the caravan or the possible weight loading of the axle fitted to a particular caravan ?
If it is the possible axle loading where do I get this information from ? Is there a plate somewhere on the axle?

My concern is that I never get anywhere near the 1350 kg MTPLM so would a red shocker rated at 1301 to 1800 kg give too much resistance ? The blue, on the other hand, is rated at 901 to 1300 kg, the higher figure being nearer to my actual loading. Consequently would the blue version be too 'weak' ?

If the MTPLM of your van is 1350kg then you should fit the red ones.as to your comments regarding your personal loading being well under 1300kg!! My van has a miro off 1150 & a MTPLM of 1350 a 200kg payload but with the mover 35kg battery 15kg & 2 X gas bottles 20kg I find the remaining 130kg very tight & thats with all heavy gear like awnings chairs ect put in the car

you need red1350 upwards it dont make to mutch diffrence unless you go for a to lighter shock for van,. remember they van only take
the bounce out off the travell on the rubber ihserts on axle .I fitted them and they seem to help with the bouncy problems after a bump but they arnt as life changing as i thought.

Ring Al ko and they will tell you the colour you need for your van.

I fitted them to our TA five years ago. I noticed an improvement in road stability in so far as cross winds and coaches passing me had a less adverse effect. However there is no question of doubt the interior fixings and contents do not appear to move around like they used to.

So I conclude they have calmed the ride down which means the overall handling characteristics must be better with than without.

Thanks to all who replied. I've got the shockers (red) and spent about 45 minutes each wheel fitting them including having to move the motor mover slightly sideways on each wheel. By tipping the caravan backwards so that the front was up in the air there was no need to remove the road wheels.
Going away for a 300 miles round trip on Sunday so I'll see what, if any, difference they make. Got them at what I think was a good price - £69.49 including delivery.

Well, I'm back after a 300 miles round trip with the new shock absorbers on. Whilst there was no fantastic difference the ride did feel generally smoother and some of the roads did leave a bit to be desired surface-wise. The sideways pull of passing vehicles, particularly coaches, seemed to be far less. Am I happy that I spent the money and time fitting them - yes I think I am.
