We are spending a week each in Delft and Arnhem next year, and our final week will be in Belgium (Oudenaarde). We would like to find a site in NW Germany. On the Rhine? Priorities are being able to use bikes instead of the car for almost everything, and having an open air swimming pool either on the site or within (say) 2 miles.

We're not asking for much are we ....... we've tried looking on the internet, but most of the hits are only in German. Has anyone toured in that area? Any recommendations?

Coming up the Rhine from Arnhem, there are a couple of campsites on or near the river until you'd need to turn off towards Belgium and the site at Oudenaarde. The first one is just across the border in Germany at Kalkar-Wissel on Lake Wissel. The second is Campingpark Kerstgenshof in Labbeck near Sonsbeck. It's got an excellent rating but doesn't have a swimming pool. The third is Azur Campingpark Meerbusch near D

There's one more campsite in Cologne that may be worth considering. It's Campingplatz Berger in Cologne, Rodenkirchen and also right on the banks of the river.

Try looking under the town of Baccarach or Bingen in your overseas sites directory; camping right on the bank of the Rhine and if you are lucky, as we were, you might get there on No Car weekend when they shut the roads to all vehicular traffic on both sides of the Rhine and it becomes Bicycles only for about 15 miles each side of the river. A fantastic sight, all those bikes of every type, size and pulling baby carriages too.

The No Car weekend along the river between Koblenz and Mainz is always the last weekend in June.
