The cheques have arrived so starting to plan the route from Bilbao up to Caen over 6 weeks starting May20th. We thought we might spend the first week or so near to Bilbao/San Sebastion before heading into France. We found (in2010) that most of the sites in Spain have very small pitches tho and some of them are huge and not very nice at all. Any recommendations in that area near the coast? We have ACSI card as well as CCheques.

Not quite in Spain but La Rouletta at St Jean de Luz is only just across the border and has good facilities and a friendly welcome. Choice of pitches, supermarket within a mile or less. Only snag is EHU at 5 amps but it should be quite warm when you get there.
Site much used by those going to Spain / Portugal in winter who do not use the long ferry crossing.
Quite a number of other sites in the same area too.

Looked at going to St Jean de Luz. Looked at both ACSI and C Cheque sites. Several sites in each but no that one. How big is it? Some of the Alan Rogers sites are huge and don't appeal.

Have a look at Camping Playa del Regaton, Laredo, Cantabria about 38 miles east of Bilbao. More than adequate for an overnighter - in fact a couple we met on the ferry who were intending to stay one night took one look at the place and booked for a week.

Thanks Mike,
had a look online on the acsi website. Looks nice but am puzzled by the fact that I cannot find it in their latest book. Why is that? Don't they put all their sites in the book? How do you find them when you are in transit then? We used to drive with a particular site in mind but if we didn't like it or the traffic was bad, say, we would look at the book to find an alternative.
puzzled??
