Hello Carol,
We visited Chateau de L'Eperviere with the Practical Caravan Rally this year. Its based in Gigny-sur-Saone and is a 10/15minute walk to the River Saone. This has a track suitable for walking/cycling either way, and I know that some of our fellow ralliers cycled south to Tournus, in a not too long a time. It has two small lakes suitable for fishing, and the Chateau has a good Take Away with Pizzas and other delights along with a Fine Restaurant in it, with a Bar in what was presumably the Stables. It does have an indoor and outdoor pool, which we did not use, but they looked OK. The site Warden has been there many years and has weekly Wine Testing events, which I found extremely interesting, with good information given.
It is centrally placed to visit Beaune, Chalon sur Saone, Tournus but also take in Briancon (a Castled Village), Cluny (the Abbey), Louens, well worth a visit on market day, but this closes at 12noon, so be early. You can visit the wine area's of Beaujolais, The Haneau Dubouef Wine Museam at Romaneche-Thorins, is definitely worth a visit, its South West of Macon. The area to the West of Beaune has many well know villages, associated with many fine Burgundy wines, we visited the Chateau Mersault.
All in all a good site that is well managed, and the warden speaks excellent English. As we visited outside school holidays, I cannot comment on what it may be like during them.
Best regards,
George

Hi Carol,

We know this area reasonably well, as my sister-in-law has a house there. We have stopped at the site at St. Boil a number of times. This is just south of Buxy and a mile or two down a lane from the main road. Good access to the cycle route though and not too far from Buxy for shops. It's a lovely site, very popular most of the time, it seems, but that may be because there aren't that many sites in the area. It has a pizzeria and a pool, but we have always found the site fees quite high.
A couple of years ago we stopped for a couple of nights on the site at Cormartin, which I think used to be a municipal. It's very open and will be until the trees and hedges grow a bit, but it does have the advantage of being walking distance into the village. It's on the road from St. Genoux-le-National to Taize and Cluny.
Lots to see and do in the area and every village has a cave coperative, it seems (the one at Buxy is getting very touristy and a bit pricey).
Both are in the CC Europe 1 guide.

Another to consider is Municipal Le Lac de St. Point-Lamartine in St Point village about 10km south of Cluny. Quite a number of statics but a pleasant site adjacent to a large lake with good pike fishing, pleasere boats/ kayaks etc. and good easy walks around the lake. Easy trip into Cluny, and small town further south has basic shops. Some pitches may be difficult for long outfits and a mover is recommended.
Should be OK before the French school holidays, but that goes for most sites in the area.

The municipal at Verdun Sur Le Doubs is quite nice. On the apex of the confluence of the Doubs and the Saone, less than 10 mins walk into a pleasant market town centre. Site has large flat area next to Saone very popular with fishermen. The only downside when we were there two years ago were a ? (group of nine) Long Eared Owls that screech a lot around dusk. It's about 10 miles to Chalon-sur-Saone where we saw powerboat racing on the river, and about 12 miles from Beaune.

Also near the Saone about half way between Beaune and Chalon and west of the A6 is Chagny. The municipal there is also pleasant enough with a short walk into a rather larger market town centre. The only downside here is a railway line a distance from the site which has a catch-rail on a curve so there is a quantity of squealing from some trains.

Final advice - avoid Dijon but do visit the area around Tournus about 15 miles south of Chalon. Has something akin to perched vilages and a number of high castles worth a visit.

We stayed this year at a superb site called Chateau Chigy, near a town called Luzy. It is a large site, approx 170 acres of grounds with several large lakes. There are about 150 pitches but when we went in May only half a dozen were taken, and we had a huge field overlooking a lake all to ourselves. There is a swimming pool, looked very nice but we didn't try it. This was in the ACSI book at 15 euros pn, up to the 7th July this year.
