We belong to the cycling for softies brigade and enjoy cycling which is not too strenuous. We have previously been to Brockenhurst CC site at Black Knowl which is ideal and also up to Northumberland and stayed at the CC site at Whitley Bay.From here we could cycle along the coast up to Blythe.Norfolk was also good for cycling when we stayed at the CC site at Cromer.Does anybody know of any more good sites where we could just cycle away from the caravan and not immediately encounter steep hills and busy roads.Next year we are thinking of going up to the north of Scotland. Are there any sites up there suitable for taking the bikes?

The North of Scotland does have lots of mountains so not generally cycle friendly but the Spey Valley is good for cycling but you may need to use commercial sites in the area to get direct access eg Rothiemurchus or Boat of Garten.

Blackwall Plantation CC site near Ashbourne is next to Carsington Water which has a cycle trail round the resevoir, also not far from the Tissington and High Peak trails.

Top Loge at Stamford also has a cycle trail in Fineshade Wood next to the site and Rutland Water is only eight mile away with 23 mile of cycle trails.

Try the forestry commission site at Loch Morlich (Glenmore) which lies at the foot of Cairn Gorm near Aviemore.

Tracks lead out in all directions. If you are feeling hard enough you can cycle into the heart of the cairngorm from here.

Blackwall Plantation is also not too far away from the Manifold Way - a cycle track which used to be the Leek and Manifold Railway. When the narrow-gauge railway closed down, the rail track was lifted and the route surfaced and turned into a wonderful facility for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

It runs for eight and half glorious miles between Hulme End and Waterhouses and has a visitor centre at the old railway station at Hulme End. One of the very interesting parts of the ride takes you through an old rail tunnel which is the only section of the route open to cars etc. I'm told that this tunnel is now equipped with lights which wasn't the case when I was a regular visitor but even if this is the case, be sure to put lights on your bike if you do visit.

Olly.

PS - Again, it's quite a time since we were there, so I hesitate to make a recommendation but as we are also cycling softies, having started from Hulme End, we always used to find we were dying of thirst just as we reached a pub called the Old Crown in Waterhouses..!

Hi Margaret-If you find you have a few day's free I can recomend the new Conkers site (C&CC) site is nothing special at present but will get better as trees grow etc,but the outlook is pleasant enough.Fair bit of cycling from the site on old railway line and canal towpath.

Margaret

We are some 9 ft above sea level you can travel some 60 miles

west of our CL and the only hill you will find will be a river bridge.
