Sky - Sky Plus..Will they give me a different card?

Thinking of upgrading to Sky Plus at home but i'm worried that if I do and they change the viewing card it wont work in my Sky box in the caravan.

We currently dont have the phone lines connected at home at all either.

You have to be connected to the phone line or they send you a nasty letter. Can't remember whether you get a new card but we'd highly recommend Sky+. It's a godsend with no more searching for video tapes and the ability to set the box to record a whole series of your favourite programme. What we like best is being able to start to watch a programme that you've been recording before it finishes so you don't miss the beginning when putting kids to bed. It means that for commercial channels you can watch an hour long programme in 45 mins by skipping all the ad breaks too. You can also watch something you've recorded while recording 2 other channels - really useful if you've got several kids with differing TV tastes!

Sorry, didn't answer your question re card working in van - doh! Not tried it ourselves but sure that others on here have posted that they take their boxes and cards away with no problems.

The requirement to have the box plugged into a telephone line seems to be a bit negotiable. My son wanted Sky in his flat in January but didn't want a phone line. When he spoke to Sky they said that wasn't a problem.

We passed a Sky sales booth in a shopping outlet near Bridgend last week and I noticed one of the banners pasted across the stand said "no telephone line required".

I just tried swapping the card from our sky+ box (in the lounge) with the ordinary sky box (in the bedroom) and they both still worked.

I think if you use your Sky viewing card in a different box you will get all the same channels except the premium movie and sport channels.

Jasper is spot on,we have taken old box to France with Sky+ card 3 times in three years with no problem,get UK Gold and all the normal channels also Radio ones.No film or sports channels.Never had a letter from Sky either but long term absence of line might get a rebuke,just say it was accidentally disconnected if they chase it up.

If you swap the card from one box to another you will not get premium channels such as sport or movies

We have been taking Sky boxes for years and never had a letter about disconnected phone line----yet

If you have had the box more than 12 months or bought it independently of Sky (ie not subsidised ) its OK to disconnect the phone line.If you have multi room you are not supposed to ever disconnect the phone line as its possible to remove one box to another address (or caravan) thus not paying full subscription for 2 installations

We have had multi room for several years and taken the Sky+ box away for 5 weeks at a time with no letters as yet

I usually have a pay to view movie just before setting out and soon after returning but don't know if that has any effect

Certainly we pay them a lot each month and would withdraw from multi room if there was any problem

Hi

A much cheaper option these days is to go over to "FreeSat" which is the same Astra satellite group as Sky but without the Sky premium channels.

The only cost is for the Humax Foxsat-HDR Freesat Box which is

Hi I dont have sky+ but I do have sky.The contract you take out with sky states that you must have the box conected to a phone line in th FIRST YEAR ONLY.My box has not been conected for about 5 yrs

Alan Sky is expensive but HRH demands every Premiership fotball match and so needs the Sky Sports package and Satanta

At least it ensures she gets a good sleep as she never stays awake till half time !!

Yes you can get Humax Freesat receiver for that - but I am referring to the latest Humax Foxsat twin tuner with 320GB Hard Drive which is equivalent to Sky+ for recording/viewing

From memory I don't think they change your viewing card. The contract regarding having the phone line plugged in only lasts for the first 12 months after that it doesn't matter. I take my Sky+ box with me everytime I go away and have no problems anywhere in the country. Just to note if anyone plans to take the Sky+ box with them to watch previously recorded programmes - some of the boxes won't let you watch recorded programmes unless you have a satellite signal.

They don't issue a new card unless you go to multi room and don't have a card for the second box

They match the old card to the new Sky+ box by sending a signal after you or the engineer ask for matching to be done

It is worth noting that it is kinda pointless ordering and paying for a sky+ box when the Sky HD+ box is now so cheap and has all the functionality of Sky+ plus has a much bigger hard disk and can show HD channels (I know this is kinda pointless on caravan size TVs).

Good point if you have an HD TV at home

We usually take both Sky+ boxes when we go for 5 weeks just in case one conks out

The HD box is bigger and heavier but luckily the space in the van is not restricted

Phew! Thanks for all the replies! When we go away the kids watch a bit of TV in the mornings but I love to follow all the cycling on Eurosport.

So in summary it seems OK to upgrade to Sky+ at home and continue to use the same card in the ordinary Sky box in the caravan as you retain the same card.

Litespeed I like to watch the cycling on Eurosport and have found that although the card needs to be matched to the box for other sport chanels it will for some strange reason get Eurosport if in the wrong box

Eurosport is a free channel (like the BBC etc) so you actually don't need a card at all to watch it. Setanta, Sky Sport etc are premium channels. There is even a Eurosport HD channel, however having had Sky HD since mid January, I have yet to actually find anything in HD on the Eurosport HD channel (quite a few of the so called HD channels broadcast most programmes in SD (ie C4 HD, Sci Fi HD). In truth I am far from convinced that HD is worth while, if you already have Sky+, but as I said it is so cheap to get the box now it probably is worthwhile.
