Hi Ann,
You can get sky in your van with a portable dish and tripod say from Max View and a standard sky receiver or even just a standard domestic dish on a tripod will do the job. If you have sky at home you can take that receiver and get exactly the same channels in the caravan as you do at home, just one thing if you are using a sky+ box you will need a twin LNB.
Once on site you may need to be little more fussy with your pitch regarding trees and any buildings that maybe close by.
I don't claim to be an expert but its reletively easy to tune in I have only failed once to get a signal and that was due to pitching in the wrong place, you live and learn.
Any more questions please ask I will try and help

Hi Ann Kieth.

Muggler has given the info. You can get a good sat dish kit from Aldi, Ldle or Maplins all for under £70.

I use a household mesh dish as the signal can get lost in windy conditions with a solid plastic dish. Most kits have a G clamp which can be placed on the jockey wheel to mount the dish, but that sometimes fouls the locker lid making gas changes difficult. I got a camera tripod for a fiver from a charity shop and mounted my dish to overcome the locker issue.

Maplins do a cracking signal finder for £15 which is a buzzer and a dial indicator, the instructions are crystal clear and only takes 5 mins to set the dish.

We use our Sky plus box with a 4 way LNB on the dish. All works as it does at home.

I use a 12 volt / 240 volt inverter to power the Sky box, to keep the box powered when we get unplugged for mowing. It svaes all the sky program settings.

Steve Your point is interesting:-

I use the sky + from home and leave it without any power source until we pitch up. Never had a problem at all. However a mate of mine always has to phone Sky to revalidate his box and card! I really don't understand why there is a variance.
Certainly all our recorded and to be recorded programmes are intact.

I wonder if some of the boxes have their own built in temporary psu?

my sky reciever is also off for months at a time as we sometimes just use freeview , or free to air satellite , and we have never had any trouble when using the sky reciever again ,
