Slime in water hog

I noticed when leaving site last time that there was a small amount a green slime inside the water hog. Obviously it will wash but does anyone have any good suggestions on how to clean this out thoroughly as i am worried that sterilising the hog alone will not shift the grime

You could try putting a handful of gravel in it along with plenty of hot water and giving it a good shake - that's what my husband used to do. Then put a diluted solution of Milton or some other sterilising fluid in it and leave it for a while, followed by a good rinse out with fresh water.

Putting gravel in and shaking it around destroys the smooth finish inside the container, providing perfect places for bacteria to grow and multiply.
Use a Milton solution and a soft long handle bottle brush to clean the contamination, followed by a rinse with fresh water.

Thanks. helpful tips both of you. Perhaps a less abrasive option would be rice. Kim and Aggie suggest that on 'How clean is your house'

Rice is probably too small to cope with a big container (I do use rice as per Kim and Aggie's instructions to clean jars etc in the kitchen). And Damian, by gravel I meant the small round pebbly things.......sorry, being a mere blonde female, I don't know the technical term!!! LOL

Its also worth pointing out that if you have slime in the water barrel, it is likely to be forming elsewhere in the water system. So its worth mixing up a water barrel full of Milton solution and pumping some through the water systems, (removing the water filter first if you have one and replacing it with a an empty or blank one to avoid damaging the filter)

Check the instructions for the filter about replacement intervals.

Always follow the dilution instructions for the sterilising fluid, and don't leave it in the system for longer than the recommended period. Always flush out with fresh water.

Go to your local pub and ask the landlord if you could have a small amount of pipeline cleaner. This is good , put some in the barrel leave itfor a while then rinse, but make sure you rince well.
