We've been in our caravan for 4 months and do most of our cooking and washing up in the van as we are on C.L. sites. We have noticed that the water pipes are smelling now, (no huge surprise) and have used milton to 'soak' them in over night and blocking off the outlet with clingfilm and a rubber band, the smell wen for a day or 2 but is now back! Help...what else can we do?

Hi

I beleive that there are several commercial "drain unblockers" on the market but I would suggest using Soda Crystals. Just get some very hot water (not boiling as it my affect your pipe connections)and disslove the crystals and simply pour down all the plug holes, block off the outlets and let it stand for about 10 minutes, rinse through and do again, after ter two or three rinses it should be ok, I would bet that it's the fatty deposits in the pipes that are causing the problem.

Good Luck

Hi Carolyn,

We had the same problem with our van, we tried lots of things down the drains but nothing worked.

In the end we sourced the smell to be coming from around the plug hole.

I took it off and the sealant around it was rotten, so I re-sealed it and the smell has now gone.

Hope this helps

Carolyn,

Make sure that it is not the odour from your waste container that is responsible. As there is no water trap in your waste system as there is at home, there is a tendency for the tank odour to percolate up your waste pipe/s.

We changed to a fixed bed model van early last year and soon began to notice the drainage smell from the wash basin now in the retiring room.

Recently I bought a different waste fitting that reduces both outlets to a single drain that when fitted suspends the outlet about 3/4 inches above the waste (depends on the pitch levels) Result, smell has really gone now due to (I think) no pipework connected to the van is now inserted into the waste water tank. It is also much easier to set up and need not be touched when tank (wastemaster) requires emptying.

The gadget is called a "RapiDrain" and I bought it on e bay vendor was "smithsktc".

We also noticed a 'pong' in the van a few days after our last trip. Did the thing with Milton but it made no difference. Then, quite by chance, I noticed the fridge door was shut. There was the source of the smell. Mould growing inside the fridge. Gave it all a good clean down and everything is all nice and fresh now.

We too also wash up in the cravan so bought some waste tank cleaner, it is meant for motorhomes with internal waste tanks, but I cannot see why you should not use it in your waste master. You pour it down the plug hole so it may clean the pipes on the way down.
