Does anyone know how/why these muggers of the seas get away with this? It seems amazing to me that, with all the resources at our (the world's) disposal we cannot exterminate them. The next time a do gooder asks me for money for anywhere in that part of the world, I shall refer them to those pirates.

I don't think any ammount of modern day Navy resources can equal the dark forces of pirating.

We know that Pirates home turf is the Caribbean and that their boats can zoom under the sea and pop up at will when they are ready to raid and plunder.

How can modern day digital and computer wizardry cope with thieves who turn in to sea creatures and the living dead.

Navy pay is not the best in the world so the authorities are unlikely to afford that Captain Jack Sparrow or Elizabeth Swann to join up and get them to the secrets at Worlds End!

The recent much publicised event where the oil tanker was held for ransom has created a bigger problem where pirates now see this as easy pickings. I suspect that will not be the last case of this that we hear of.

They should have surrounded the boat with navy and offered the pirates their lives, in prison. No negotiations for food or anything.

A ship's captain friend of mine has just published a novel about piracy off the African coast here http://archwayvideo.co.uk/books.htm.

He reckons that a ship travelling at, I think, around 15 knots can be boarded quite easily but at around 18 knots it becomes very difficult.
