Something for the Bank Holiday Sir?

If anyone is around the Lincolnshire area over the Bank Holiday and looking for something to do, its worth having a look at the airfield at RAF East Kirby. Its an old WW2 Bomber Station with much of it rebuilt to WW2 spec. One of the exhibits is a Lancaster bomber, which, although the airframe is no longer good enough to fly, the engines are perfect. Every Bank Holiday they bring out the Lanc and taxi it up and down the field. it is possible to stand so close that you are actually under the wingtip with the engines running. As they taxi away and bring the engines up somewhat in power the noise and backdraft is utterly stupefying. There is an old NAAFI there serving tea etc and some fantastic exhibits. Its around a fiver to go in and even on bank holidays isnt really crowded. Just a thought for you all.

I couldn't agree more Thingy! A great place with lots to see (for everyone). I understand that the ultimate aim is to get the Lancaster flying again, and it's not that far off. It's being restored by a couple of brothers as a tribute to another brother who was lost in a Lancaster during WW2 isn't it?

We dropped on this little gem quite by chance a couple of years ago. Thought he Lancaster was not running (not a bank hol) there is loads to see. Allow yourself plenty of time if you wish to read the very interesting info that's on the walls.

In all honesty I couldnt say, like others we dropped on this quite by accident. At this time of year its worth popping up the road too to either Woodhall Spa or Tattershal. Of course Coningsby is where the BOB flight is, and one can very often get a close up of the flight taking off.

I thought this thread would have a different content as I remember being asked that question when in my 20's in the 1970's.

It was a regular question when visiting the barbers in those days.
