Time to invest in a tyrepal system it would have alarmed and let you know there was a problem starting to occur, well before it started to cause any damage .......

I know more money to spend ;)

why not use two systems .... one on the tug & one for the van ..the display is easy to remove when not in use ...?

Now perhaps I have been lucky, I have never had a trailer tyre blow out, but then I have always checked tyre pressures before towing, and again perhaps I have been lucky, but none of my trailer tyres have ever given an indication of having a significant leak - unlike some of my car tyres.

I don't think anyone can argue against the idea of prevention being better than cure, so good management of tyres is I am certain a worthwhile investment of time.

Tyre pressure monitoring is in principle a very good idea, and if it it does alert the driver to tyre that's loosing pressure then that has to be a good thing, especially if it gives time for the driver to pull over and get things sorted before continuing their journey.

This is far more proactive approach than fitting rim bands. As far as I am concerned the jury has spoken, rim bands don't offer any real safety advantage to caravan owners. They certainly do not save the tyre, because they can only have an effect after the tyre has deflated to a very low level or lost its pressure completely, by which time the damage is done.

I don't currently a TPM system, because none of the vehicles or trailers I have had them as an option when purchased. I don't travel so far afield these days so a monitor is of less value, But when I update my car, pressure monitoring will be one item I would consider.

Having looked at new cars recently they all seem to have a TPMS built in, now mandatory according to this link:

"Tyre Pressure Monitoring System: Facts & Regulation
From 1st November 2014, in compliance with EU safety regulations, all new vehicles built are fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). This safety feature is fitted to the wheels of all cars and some vans. It uses a sensor to detect sudden or gradual changes in tyre pressure and alerts the driver."

Ah but I have never purchased a brand new car! ;)

But it further reinforces the fact that practical safety matters are now becoming mandatory, but rim or tyre bands which have been around for much longer are not mandatory - makes you wonder why

Over the past 30+ years we've had several van punctures, - 2 have resulted in blowouts that have 'wrecked' the wheel arches, & that's expensive! So taking after Sproket (You're not on commission are you Sproket?) -- Decided to invest, order placed.

My last disaster was this,

and we had run a long way before it was obvious to us in the car. (Good old Freelander!) but it did cost us a wheel arch, besides the rim & tyre. (Ps - the wheel arch was done on insurance)
