were not sure which to go for.which is best?our van has a mtplm of 1500kg but will usually be loaded to about 1430 ish.presently tow with a vectra so either is a step in the right direction.

ive been told the sorrento manual will not be in the £400 road tax bracket,is this true?

what economy do you get while towing and solo and are there any known problems with either?

which ever we choose it will be about an 05 manual version.

we look forward to your views and comments, thanks in advance.

The Manual Sorento face lifted model is stiil at the lower tax band. The automatic now goes into the higher tax band. The pre face lifted models all qualify for the lower tax band.I have Sorento o6 model and did 3000 miles towing in France this year. Great tow car.

Hi David

I can confirm Stanley's comments. The manual version is not in the igher tax bracket.

I have an 07 Sorrie and have so far only towed about a 1000 miles with it but so far it is proving to be an excellent tow car.

I also tow with a sorento. A late 04 model 2.5 diesel with a manual gearbox.

Can't fault it's towing ability. As far as fuel ecconomy goes, I havn't worked it out, all I can say is it never makes my eyes water at the filling station.

I looked long and hard at the Xtrail as well but the Sorento is just such good value for money.

Loads of Sorento info here http://kiasorento.proboards46.com/

When towing we seem to be getting about 25MPG, however that is with using the air con, which is detrimental fuel consumption.

We have also used the cruise conrol for large portions of the journey and I do not know what affect that has on fuel consumption.

We've just bought a 2003 Sorento XS manual, permanent 4 wheel drive with 60k on the clock. Excellent tow and I agree around 24-25 mpg: solo, one long run so far - 34mpg.

We have been towing with a 04 plate XE auto for the last year and we are really impressed with the car. Bought the Sorento because it had the kerbweight to handle any future caravan we may get. Seem to be getting around 30 mpg solo and around 24 towing, we are also currently towing 1500kg. No experience of the XT but a number of forum members who use the car speak well of it.

Graham, I don't think any Sorento is permenant 4W drive, what I beleive happens is that on the XE model, you have to manually engage the 4w drive, where as on the XS and XT the motors engage automatically when the differential senses any slip in the driving wheels. As I do not yet own one (it's on the Christmas list), I'm sure any owner will correct me if I am wrong and point you in the right direction,

best regards, Martin

hi david, i have just looked at some figures on the cuddles site and the www.whattowcar.com site and this is what i have found.

nissan x-trail 2.2dci 05 = kerb 1520, 85% is 1292, max ball weight 100, max to tow 2000.

sorento 2.5 crdi 05 = kerb 2056, 85% is 1748, max ball weight 112, max to tow 2800.

figures from what tow car matches

nissan x-trail towing, van fully loaded approx 1484kg - xtrail 1550kg = total match in towing 96%

sorento towing, van fully loaded approx 1484kg - sorento 1956kg = total match in towing 76%

i hope i have helped. if anybody says i have done these figures wrong please let me know.

thanks

Hi, we have an 04 Sorento XS auto and it has been totally reliable with very reasonable Main Dealer service costs (compared to previous TD5). It tows extremly well (1400kg) and makes fora relaxed cruiser. It's consumption is 22-23mpg towing (24mpg in France ) and around 30-32mpg solo. Howver when we go down to one car the fuel consumption will be a pain so I am looking at alternatives, but must admit going back to a normal fron wheel drive estate is something I would want to avoid, so Skoda Scout, VW Passat 4 motion look interesting. Howver happily this difficult choice will not have to be made this year, sp perhaps Ford will have 4wd Mondeo, or S-Max with thier new 6 speed autoboxes! Well a chap can only dream!

I have been towing with our Sorento for a year now and it has just had its first service. I can honestly say that when towing our van it still brings a smile to my face and the more miles it gets under its belt the more fuel efficient it is. At the filling station it can swallow 60 quids worth of diesel no problem but it does return a fair mpg when solo, I dont know the exact figure but I should imagine 28/30 ish. As for towing mpg, we live in Bristol and if I fill to the brim and tow to the bottom of Cornwall there is plenty left for a weeks running around and then fill up to return. The only problem we have had in its first year was a leaking rear window and the dealer replaced the rubber and it has been fine since.

I looked at the X Trail last year also but a year old one was the same price as a brand new Sorento, so the Kia it was. A chap at work has a newish X Trail and has had problems with the turbo, bit of a common fault I understand.

Perhaps I am in a better position to anwer this question as I have owned an X-Trail and now own a Sorento. Of the two the X-Trail is the nicer vehicle to drive solo as it handles more like a car. However I feel the Sorento is marginally a better tow car. I would also point out that I changed because I wanted an automatic box which was not available in the X in diesel form at that time. As far as economy is concerned my observations from careful records of miles covered and fuel added are as follows.

X-Trail, around town about 26mpg, solo long runs mid 30's towing 23/26mpg.

Sorento(auto) around town short runs 18mpg, long runs 25/30mpg and towing around 19/21 mpg.

Hi David

Just got back from holiday and when I saw the heading of this topic I wondered if you would comment

I get about 36mpg most fills with a lot of short runs from the manual 2.2 XT diesel and about 24 towing the Oklahoma.

The NEW XT is now available with 6 speed auto diesel and a review in the Mail said that they got 30mpg with the auto box.

Nissan do themselves no favours in the information given on kerbweight but I have seen more than one report of 1650-1700 kg when the 2.2 diesel was weighbridged

My XT 2.2 Columbia tows the Oklahoma(max 15ookg) with absolute ease and we have towed to Spain etc more than once

It will cruise at 60 mph in 6th gear on most Uk motorways

Hi Dave

Have a look at uksorento.com, a forum for Sorie owners. Mine has been brilliant. Over the last 2 1/2 years and some 49k miles we get 28mpg towing and 32mpg solo. Our 2.5 diesel xs has the self levelling suspension, now omitted from the face lift model. I've never looked back and reliability and towing stability are fantastic.A real excellent tug.

Good luck

Alan

Hi Alan

I note you have done 49K miles in 2.5 years, this is close to 20K per annum.

I am retired and only do about 7K per annum, hence the short journeys, and the quite big difference in MPG.

Hi Jim.

Both I an dmy wife used the Sorie for business until end of last year when we retired early. Most of our 49k was done on motorways at a steady 70 mph in cruise control. In the first 10k miles she was a thirsty beast but as the miles piled her mpg improved . I am a member of the uksorento.com forum and have purchased a powerbox and k&n filter from Taff at Griffin Tuning. What a difference that made. Cheers

Hi Jim

Have you had a chance to view the uksorento forum site? The powerbox really makes a difference as inded do the diy rear mudflaps! No more dirty front panels for me!

Cheers
