Entering from Switzerland and leaving via Austria seems a bit of an odd way round! We've been to the Black Forest and Lake Constance - both of which are well worth visiting if you like that kind of thing. Would help if you could give an idea of the type of site and sights that might interest you. Also where are starting from - Calais, Belgium, Holland? For most German sites, there's not much of July that is useable for Camping Cheques.

Hi John, maybe I should have explained more clearly. we are in Europe for 6 months, via the tunnel then around Brittany and across Loire and will then be in switzerland as daughter wanted to visit us there, then planning to go into Germany, Austria then Italy but are quite flexible with arrangements but were trying to stay in Quieter areas July/August??. We like historic/quaint towns and natural beauty. New to it all so site wise CC sites seem good value but from choice would prefer quiet smaller sites.Thought about the Moselle and black Forrest and will look at Lake Constance now. Thanks for responding.

You'll find that July is pretty much high season. The Dutch will be everywhere, in particular along the Moselle, but also in the Black Forest. If you want a bit more peace and quiet, I'd suggest you try some of the less well known parts of the country. They also have plenty of quaint historic towns. You could try driving along the River Main, for example, from Frankfurt to W

If you like historic/ quaint towns, then you might consider the Romantic Route (Romantischestrasse), the Southern end of which is Fussen. I know that's a bit away from where you originally wanted to be, but there are nice places on Lake Constance and you could pick up some of the Romantic Route before heading for Fussen and then over the border into Austria, We love Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, very touristy and busy in high season, but well worth the effort to see it. Can particularly recommend the Nightwatchman evening tour. Neuschwanstein castle is near Fussen and also worth a look. As Lutz says, you'll be lucky to find CC sites in July and the best places will be busy but the sites are generally very well run. Site access roads tend to be narrow with tight pitches, so a Motor Mover is a big help. We've managed without up to now, but finally succumbed after some struggles last year!

We are in the Black Forest at the moment. We are at the 5 star site Alisehof Scharzwaldcamping. It is 23.50 deg cent hot and sunny. We have been here 4 times and it is 5 star but the toilets and Showers are 7 star wonderful. So is the owner he is so helpful puts your jockey wheel down and unhitches for you after you have chosen your pitch. It is quiet in the country and the nearest small town is Wolfach large town Freudenstadt and you can always book ahead. Now we are here on the ACSI card 15 euros per night.

details are:- Kurt Bonath Owner. Rippoldsau Strasse 4, D-77776 Rippoldsau-Shapbach

Tel 0789/203. email info@camping-online.de Web sitewww.camping-online.de Kurt speaks english well so no problem. Listed in the CC europe book too.

Happy holidays

Have looked at Bavaria and it looks fantastic, we will probably spend time at Lake Constance and on the Romantic Route. Can you recommend any camp sites please? prefer quiet and they will need to accept our dog. I realise that camping cheques wont be accepted at these times (July/Agust)so would we be better pre booking?

thanks again

We stayed at Friedrichshafen, about half way along Lake Constance two years ago at Campingplatz CAP-Rotach. It's only about a ten minute walk from the ferry terminal.(Ferries to Constance and Lindau which we visited, and Romanshorn in Switzerland).

Although a bit of a trek, thanks to an "umleitung" we visited Neuswanstein from there. We also went to the prehistoric lake village at Unteruhldingen. There is a lot to see in that area. We then moved on to Donauworth on the Romantic Road, staying at Donau-Lech camping. Both of these sites were taken from the Caravan Club "Caravan Europe 2" book and were each very good (clean facilities etc.) and I would certainly use either of them again. If anything the one at Donauworth was quieter, being a few miles outside the town.

We did a lot of sightseeing (as is our usual practice) and can tell you more if you need it.

Bavaria's a big place, so you may need to move around a bit if you want to see much of the area. We've stayed at Donau Lech as well and it's a nice site - to be honest,I haven't found many poor German sites but some are located better than others. For Neuschwanstein and Fussen, we stay at Camping Brunnen (www.camping-brunnen.com/home-en.html). Excellent site with good restaurant. The couple of times we've stayed on Lake Constance we've used Camping Uberlingen, with lake access (but no beach) about a mile out of the pretty town, but with a free bus into the centre to catch the Lake ferries. If you like flowers, don't miss Mainau island - excellent day out. The site is popular with divers. Website is in German (www.campingpark-ueberlingen.de/) but they speak English at reception. If you want to visit a particular site at the time you're going, then it would be advisable to book. Lake Constance is very popular (and expensive!) in high season. As you're away for a long time, I would really recommend buying the CC Caravan Europe books - we always use them to find sites in new areas and they're rarely wrong.

Hiya,

We have just returned from a trip to the Black Forest.

Has anyone else visiting the area ever paid a local tax? while staying on site. We were charged 27.96 euros for a four night break.

The reason I asking as we were not charged on other sites.

Are you aware of any local taxes added to site fees?
