We recently found that our plastic shower tap had split (probably frozen water in it - good reason to leave taps open when draining down).
As a new tap shower set is c.£30 to £40 and I had nothing to lose as the old one would have to be thrown out, I thought I would try the following and it works.
Heat of a sharp ended knife on a gas hob until the end glows red (you will have to keep reheating it) and run the point of the knife along the split at an appx depth of 1-2 mm.
Once this is done than run the heated flat of the knife along the crease to smooth it back over.
Test the tap - you may have to repeat the procedure on some spots but it worked first time for us.
The knife and looks of the tap are unaffected, I hope this helps someone
