We are thinking of staying in St. Remy de Provence in late June/early July. We are likely to be there around 10 days. Several sites are listed in Caravan Europe vol 1. Does anyone have any experience of these/recommendations? Given the number of sites in the area, would we be OK just turning up? We usually do this and have been OK all over France to date, but this year we are going a week or so later than usual.

Hi Jo. Last April we stayed at Camping Pegomas which is in the CC book and found it to be very good. It's a 5 minute walk into St Remy and has good facilities including a pool and small bar. At the time we were there it was about 25% full. There is excellent walking in the Alpilles and the local market is huge. There's also lots of places to visit, including the Camargue.

St Remy is a lovely town - and on market day it really buzzes. We took my 90 year old mum-in-law to France for her first ever flight, in January 2008 - and had a morning walking around the market in St Remy, which she absolutely loved. We were 'serenaded' by Patrick and Muriel (two street singers) outside the cafe where we sat (yes in January!!!) to have a coffee - and she was given an autographed CD when they heard it was a birthday treat!

We also did Les Baux, and Glanum (a roman village nearby, which is like a mini-Ephesus). As said, you're near enough to the Camargue, Arles, and also the 'Peter Mayle' country, of Gordes, Bonnieux, etc. Do visit Fontaine de Vaucluse, for the stunning river scenery, and also Rousillon for the red ochre rocks - make sure you take a camera, the colours are amazing.

We've never caravanned there, usually choosing to be nearer to the coast, but would like to do so in the future. I can't imagine that you'll have a problem finding pitches - though it is a popular place, and even in winter there was quite a crowd 'doing' the market!

Hi all,

Revisiting this again, as we think we may need to book for 10 days or so at the end of June (went to Cahors a week earlier a couple of years ago and got the impression that turning up on spec was dicey). Pegomas seems to be popular, although Evans preferred the municipal (do you mean Le Mas de Nicolas?). What didn't you like about Pegomas? Has anyone stopped at Monplaisir? Even better, does anyone have experience of more than one site in the area? On the whole, we prefer smaller sites, but would like a pool. I have picked these three as we like to be within walking distance of facilities (no drinking and driving....)We will be there from about the 23rd June. Do we need to book? What is your experience?. We usually go to France a little earlier and never book ahead.

Le Mas de Nicolas is tha one I was think of and it appears to have changed slightly.

Pegomas I found rater overgrown by trees - not too bad if its hot, but it wasn't.

We stayed at Monplasir in September 2007 for 10 days. We had prebooked which cost a fairly large booking fee ( I can't remember how much) but the day we arrived they were full up so I was glad we had. It also gave us a decent pitch as quite a few are small. Very nice site, a bit cheek to jowl in places but there is a lot of high hedging too. This affords protection from the Mistral when it blows. The swimming pool was too cold to swim in in early September which was a disappointment. There's an excellent large supermarket a couple of hundred yards away and just beyond it you are into the town centre.

I would have no hesitation recommending this site but there were a couple of things that could have been better.

A warm swimming pool.

Somewhere to ditch grey water other than the chemical toilet outlet which was a good distance away.

otherwise no problems.

Make sure you visit Pont du Gard too. Amazing structure.

Remy is a perfect centre to tour from.

Thanks all. I think we will take our usual approach of not booking ahead and hope to find a place when we get there. With 3 sites to choose from, we should be OK. Thanks for all your help.

Jo - you might want to reconsider - I have just checked all 3 sites for vacancies in July and only one has any !!

Hi Jo

we have used Monplaiser for 15 years and love it! I wouldnt risk not booking though as lots book as soon as they leave for the next year, check their web site as suggested its good even down to being able to see the site plan.

we tend to go for the older side of the camp but the newer pitches nearer the pool get more sun and are very big.

Its family run and very friendly.

so much to see in the area and st remy is very nice, rather sophisticated at the side of lots of france, but not as pricey as the coast.

Regards Maddy

Thanks for the tip John. We took your advice and checked. Only certain availability for the dates we wanted was at Mas de Nicolas, so we have booked there. We are not huge users of facilities, although we like a nice site and a pool within walking distance of a town, so it will be just right, I think.

Jo
