Stabilisers...

I have recently changed my car and the new 2.0 TDCi C-Max has a detachable tow-bar and it works well. However, although the 'van was always been a most stable tow behind my 1.8 Cavalier and then my 2.0 Mondeo I always used a SAS blade/friction type stabiliser 'just-in-case' and it is now not possible to use it on the C-Max. I would appreciate any advice on a suitable stabiliser. Could I replace my coupling head with one which incorporates the popular ALKO stabilisers? Is there a less expensive option?

I had a similar problem when I changed car recently and decided to go for upgrading the coupling head of my Bailey Ranger, changing the standard head for an Alko 2002. I'm so pleased that I did. It is a DIY job if you are of reasonable ability and you have a socket set. The cost seems high initially but it is so much more convenient just to hitch up and the stabiliser is in place automatically. The Alko hitch-lock is a reasonable add-on and, once again, so convenient.

Once done, I don't think you will regret it.
 
It may seem a daft question, Ray, but why can`t you use a blade type stabiliser with a detachable towbar?

I used my bulldog one for seven years before getting my new van, and still have the clamp which fits the bar, and doesn`t cause any problems. Why should it? it`s only doing what the manufacturer designed it to do.

To pay several hundred quid for something when you can get a bracket for your current stabiliser for comparatively little seems extravagent.
