Status aerial turning off

I'm on a site with poor tv reception. I've been here before and it's a seasonal pitch. I cannot get signal using the fitted status tv aerial so I've connected a large home type tv aerial to the socket outside and connected it internally to the status box. I've done this exact same thing before which means the cable isn't coming through the window and can be connected to the aerial point inside behind the tv.
Problem is, this weekend when I connected the internal cable from the to to the aerial point on the wall behind the tv, the status box turns off and the red light goes out. Does anyone know why/what is happening. It's driving me mad. Especially when I know it's worked before!

If you have a home type aerial fitted try putting in strait into the tv rather than the status box ....

What type of status aerial is fitted to your van ?

Just bypass the amplifier. I believe the input and output leads will have coax connectors on them for plugging into the amplifier, work out whether they are male or female, unplug them from the amp and use a coax coupler for the bypass.

Not quite. If the aerial has purple writing on it the amp is in the aerial and the internal box is only a power supply. By-pass the box and the aerial amp will get no power so you receive no signal.

If it has red/orange writing then the amp is in the box and by-pass will work.

However before you do that, take each of the aerial plugs and sockets apart and make sure there are no shards or fine wire shorts between the cable core and the outer screen - surprisingly common.

The OP said he was using an external domestic type aerial so he doesn't need to power the on-board aerial amplifier. ;)

OK, but why does the fitted Status aerial not work - that was the point I was trying to make?

And if he has a purple written aerial and is trying to feed the signal from the external domestic aerial through the Status internal box (not quite clear what he was actually doing in terms of wiring) the aerial will short circuit the box and stop it working.
