Could anyone suggest a stopover for one night enroute to Lazy Rancho in Interlaken from Dunkerque. We are then travelling down to Lake Como and would like any suggestions for a stopover or two on the way back (five days leisurely drive). Thanks.

Hi YSG

We travelled down from Dunkerque to Lake Como, Camping La Riva last Summer. Out late July home 1 September. We went over on the 4.00 am boat from Dover - a lovely new Norfolk Line boat - excellent service at a bargain price. Affer a couple of hours sleep at an aire near Lisle travelled down the free autoroute via Belgium and Luxembourg. We made good time and stopped off at an aire near Nancy. We then went over the Col de Boussang and stayed at camping Acasias in Cernay. This is a pleasant site in an interesting little French town. It is right next door to a stork reserve - you can go and watch them nesting and flying around the area. The site has few facilities but the toilets are clean and the warden very friendly and helpful. There is a very good municipal swimming pool right outside the campsite gate - we tried it out very pleasant on a hot sunny day.

After a few days there we drove down through Switzerland only stopping for fuel and went over the St Gotthard Pass, there were long queues for the tunnel. NB if you follow this route go into Germany BEFORE crossing into Switzerland as if you cross from France one has to pass through the centre of Basle. Last summer this was horrendous with lots of road works and diversions.

We didn't stop in Switzerland, other than for fuel and the loo, but we have stopped in Interlaken area a few years back. Have you booked Lazy Rancho yet - we looked but found it rather crowded and so went to nearby Brienz there we found 2 lovely little sites right on the lakeside and spent several happy weeks there. We got the cheap train, boat and cable car tickets and had a super time touring the nearby mountains.

Back to last year. From St Gotthard pass we drove down to Camping La Riva at the northern end of Lake Como. We got a lovely large pitch overlooking the river just north of where it flows into the lake. A very pleasant site with a outdoor pool and supermarket and village shops within 10 mins drive. Getting there does involve driving up the east side of Lake Como, lots of tunnels (I don't like them much). We finished off our hols with 2 glorious weeks at Camping Cavallino on the Jesolo Peninsula east of Venice. We alternated between visiting Venice and easy car and boat ride away and recovering from the Venice crowds on the adjacent Adriatic beach.

We intend to go back to Italy next summer. On the way back we stayed at Camping Chenefleur near Florenville in Belgium. This is just off the motorway a little bit north of Luxembourg. This was a lovely riverside site with a friendly Dutch owner - Fred. NOTHING WAS TOO MUCH TROUBLE for Fred, that was good for us as our car had broken down and we were stranded there. Apart from Breakdowns Camping Chenefleur would make an excellelnt night halt going either way.

Hope this is some help.

Happy 'vanning

Tim
