Stopovers en route Dordogne

Hi all,

Thinking of taking fast ferry to St Malo and heading south to the Dordogne. I'm wondering where's good to stopover on the way. It's 628km, about 400 miles, according to Google and at 50mph with dog and disabled partner that's about a two day trip for us.

Where's good for dog walks, peace and quiet when we get there?

Can you give us some more details, e.g. have you a proposed route, likely stopover areas and final area in the dordogne - its a big place you know? Also, are you planning to do this now (in which case you will certainly find peace & quiet)or next summer? For us (two dogs and a non driving partner), two days would be the very minimum travel time but we tend to go for a couple of months so time is not of the essence,

Earlier this year we did the route from St Malo to Saint Avit de Loisir, near Le Bugue in one day. Rolling off the ferry at the crack of dawn, finally reaching the site at around 18:30. One very long day of driving!

Next year we are taking a different approach, getting the early morning ferry from Dover-Calais, and then driving to a site in the Loire Valley, just off of the A10 at Orleans. We should have a relaxing drive, and a leisurely overnight stay before heading on to the Dordogne nice and refreshed the next day.

Going this way means we do have a bit more driving to do in France from Calais, but we are saving almost

We're going for 2 weeks probably end of June and want to stay in the site recommended by the camp&carav club, Vezere Perigord, for 1 whole week. Hope folks have stopover ideas and their experience of timing.

Vatan on the A20. Village etape excellent municipal easy to get to off the autoroute 4 mins off the main drag. Nice little town good clean facilities and cheap.

Dourdan just off the A10 is good for a stopover. It's in the CC handbook.

A great stopover sight, again just off the A10 just South of Orlean is at SALBRIS, we have used it now for a number of years, good facilities nice town within walking distance on a lake, watch out for the Coypou's

Hi Nicky

Leaving St Malo in the morning we have used Camping Eden listed in the CC guide under Montaigu. Its 148 miles and a couple of miles off the N137. Its not great but its open all year and ok for somewhere to put your head down for a quiet night. There are lots of sites along this route but it depends on the time of year how many will be open.
