hi

iain has just wired our 12 s socket up to our award northstar.

now every thing fitted as per instructions, though, fridge not functioning,"well no light" Until we connect the black wire FROM THE 12 S SOCKET to the body of the car, then "hey presto fridge working".

when we connect the black wire FROM THE 12 S SOCKET , the electric box in the wardrobe, is making a clicking noise,,"IS THIS NORMAL" only does it when wire applied, once,,,and when wire taken off once,,is this our box sensing a 12s input and switching all other 12 volts utilities off....

WHEN THE BLACK WIRE IN THE 12S SOCKET IS CONNECTED, THE FRIDGE WORKS FROM 12 S, BUT NOTHING ELSE WORKS.if the lights are left on and the black wire is connected then the lights will go off and the box electric meter in wardrobe will click, fridge light will illuminate, when black wire from 12 s is removed fridge light goes off and the internal 12 volt lights come back on

when we disconnect the black wire from the 12 s all 12 volts in van work, apart from fridge.

this noise in the box frightened iain, he thought something might get damaged, he has said it sound like a big relay opening

we do not want to do any damage to this, so we seek EXPERT HELP WITH THIS ONLY.

p..ssssss

WHEN THE FRIDGE DIDNT ILLUMINATE AT FIRST ,,IAIN TRACED THE WIRES ALONG AND INSIDE THE VAN,,,THE END OF THE 12S WIRE IN THE VAN DIDNT HAVE THE BLACK WIRE CONNECTED TO EARTH AND IT WAS FITTED WITH A DIFFERENT FEMALE CONNECTOR THAN THE REST OF THE VAN EARTHS,

IAIN CUT THIS CONNECTOR OFF AND RUBBED IT ON THE EARTH AND THIS IS WHERE THE STRANGE HAPPENINGS HAPPENED

THANX

LAURA AND IAIN,

Hi,

Not 100% clear about your question but....

Black is the dedicated earth for the fridge. If this wasn't connected then it wouldn't work.

When it is connected AND the car ingnition is ON the the relay in the van should click ON and the fridge will work. When disconnected or car engine is switched OFF then another click will see the fridge relay and hence the fridge switched OFF.

When 12s is plugged in it triggers a 'habitation' relay that turns off all your other 12v appliances.

The only things that work when 12s is plugged in and engine running is fridge and battery charge.

Now your black is earthed as it should be sounds like all is working well.

NB fridge is greatly reduced power on 12v

hi

colin

thanx very much

we thought that this was correct,,also means the manufacturer forgot to wire the fridge for 12s, "not like them eh".

we also wanted to check first as we didnt want to risk any uneccesary damage,to our beautiful van

regards

your black 12s should be grounded at the car end. Test this by outting a ulti meter across 6 and 7 - red and black. Reading should be approx 14v. Thats your fridge supply.

Inside the van the two wires should run to the relay box, thru the relay and then direct to the fridge.

No problems.

be careful. In my bailey its black and red from the 12s to the relay box (in my case under the sofa).. and then red and white to the fridge. White is ground / return all over my van.

hi

THINK IM CORRECT IN SAYING

from 99 most vans have white and black for the earths, takes some work out for one earth to do,,also thicker cables to cope with things betta.

WHITE IS EARTH FOR CHARGE

AND BLACK IS EARTH FOR FRIDGE.

you are entirely correct though for pre 99 vans,,trailers as well i beleive

thanx for your input,,its all appreciated
