We have been driving Subarus now for over 20 years, the last 2 were both 2 litre petrol engine and are excellent tow vehicles. (nothing ever goes wrong with them!)
Our current version is a 2 litre Forester ( AWD) and we can't fault it as a tug.
My wife uses it for towing a horse trailer across muddy fields and its also used for the caravan. We often visit Exmoor, Porlock, Countisbury etc and they hold no terrors, the Forrester always has an abundance of power reserves and the gearing is first class ( there's low ratio as well if you fancy using it to tow your van up otherwise impossible terrain..... impossible that is for "ordinary" vehicles)
In the snow they are superb as well... we really cant fault them...although Gagakev is right they can be a tad thirsty on petrol but not a huge difference really from lesser cars ( we get around 25mpg or so when towing fully loaded and about low 30's when solo.
Max tow weight is 2 ton and we often see them on Exmoor) loaded to the max or sometimes beyond!... its doesn't seem to slow them down at all.
We tend to do things by the book... and are well impressed, we haven't seen anything so far that even compares with the Forester...
Usual disclaimers etc
Happy caravanning
