I wonder if anyone has any advice about generators. We are due to go away next weekend to a music festival where there is no electric hook-up facility so I am thinking of buying a small suitcase style generator as a back-up to the Electric Battery. Do you think this is a good idea as we are a family of 4 (2 children) and not sure how long the battery will last as we will be away nearly 3 days.

Also does anyone know the cheapest and quietest generator around and where I can purchase it quickly!?? Thanks very much.

we were away at the weekend to a rally and didnt have a hook up our battery did us fine (2 adults & 2 under 6 yrs) but it depends on how much you are going to be in the van and what you want to use it for. we do have a generator but we try not to use it. our battery is only 3 months old so i am not sure if that will make a difference or not. if you get a generator i would check with a sparky that it is running at a steady volts and doesnt put out more power when you swith something off we were using our geny at xmas when we had a power cut and when we swithched off a lamp it ended up blowing a fuse and some damage to our boiler in the house hope this helps.

Fluff

Whatever you decide on get a generator with the inverter technology. you get a cleaner output. The cheaper ones are liable to blow sensitive equipment like laptops or caravan battery chargers. There are many threads arguing for or against generators. We rally quite a bit without ehu and can manage 3 days without any power. you do need to watch your useage tho. Don't run blown air constantly or an extractor fan! An alternative is to take an extra battery or a solar panel. The advantage of a generator is that you can use the TV and a hair drier etc. Modern ones are very quiet. Try looking on www.peakgenerators.co.uk or www.justgenerators.co.uk. But don't buy the cheapest 2 stroke as they are totally unsuitable for your needs.
