I want to charge a supplementary leisure battery in the boot of my car, using the 'S' plug on my towbar, when travelling solo. I have seen various responses on other web sites, but can anyone please provide a 'laymans' response. Thanks

Hello Len,

Yes this is possible, but there are a number of safety precautions you need.

The battery should be secured in a container to catch any acid spills. The box should be secured to prevent it sliding around. The battery box should be ventilated to the outside to allow any hydrogen from the charging process to escape. The battery clips should be durrable and insulated to minimise the chance of accidental short circuits.

Use the S plug, with the power taken from a charging relay circuit. Both wires should be have 10Amp fuses fitted. Do not consider using a cigarette lighter type socket as these cannot handle the current.

If in any doubt check with a qualified electrician.

Hi, John,

Thanks for your reply. I was planning to provide a stable and leak proof home for the battery, it was just the connections I'm not 100% sure about.

When you say both cables should have a 10 amp in-line fuse, do you mean both the supply from pin 2 and the earth as well ???

Regards,

Len.
