Found this in the van today, under the bed (Thought it was a water filter at first)
it's positioned on the cold feed just before it goes to the shower.
What does it do?
Does it need replacing at certain intervals?
No mention of it in my handbook
And yes it need cleaning!!!

It just stops your water pump from "hunting", and yeas you could give a wipe on the outside, no maintenance needed

As Hutch says, maintenance free. An air pocket compresses and evens out pressure surges at the taps. The picture is a cross section of an industrial one, but the principle is the same.

Yes it's purpose is to mimic the air cap in the hot water tank, so the pressure on both the hot and cold feeds to the shower match each other more closely, and thus reduce alternate surges of cold and hot water at the shower head.

Known as a surge damper as per the description. They occasionally go faulty and can cause some weird issues.
